New, as in still under warranty new? Warranty that will be invalid when you turn the first screw? Don't. If your drive is damaged take it to an apple service center.
Opening any laptop is painful, and the iBook is particularly bad.

An internet search should produce some instructions. Make sure you have all the correct tools, as well as a pair of tweezers, an assortment of labeled containers for all the small parts, and a camera to record your progress. Good luck!

i haven't done it, but i believe 'pain in the ass' is understating the issue. my understanding is that it is significantly more difficult than doing more work inside a TiBook.

best of luck if you try it.

err What do you want to get to the drive for??

More Space??? More Speed?? Get a External FW Drive you will get much more of Both and for much less money then a slow, small internal.

Yes if you look on the internet you will find.

I recently at the Displeasure of Replacing the KB on a 12 Inch Aluminbook....

**** Tell you a story..(example) I got a copy of Apples Offical PDF how too....

Pop of 4 Keys, remove 2 silver tape circles, remove 2 screws, lift keyboard up DAMN Stuck in the middle somewhow. Hmmm STOP whoops

Documentation was Wrong Flip system over remove ram door, remove long undocumented screw. Now lift KB, Remove Ribbon cable connector, damn broke it. lucky the new kb has a new connector attached to it. A lot easier push it on then pull it off, reverse all of above...

Anyway, moral of the story is, even the docs can be wrong.

when dealing with laptops, there are ergonomic advantages to being untethered. an ethernet cable is cheaper than an Airport card, but that doesn't necessarily make it the right choice.

on a nostalgic tangent: i bought a 1st gen clamshell iBook long ago, and my first order of business was upgrading the hard drive. i'd always done my own laptop drive replacement before, but one look at a disassmebly guide convinced me not to do it this time.

i took the iBook to my local Apple shop, and i watched the very skillful and experienced tech curse like a sailor and sweat like a donkey for over an hour swapping out the drive. these machines are not designed for easy access.

well i WAS gong to replace the hard drive as there was SUPPOSEDLY a clicking sound from it and it wouldnt boot, but upon receiving it i did NOT hear any clicking noise, and the machine after running a PLETHORA of tools (disk warrior, norton systemworks, tech tool etc...) boots like a charm. But it would be good to know how to do it in case th drive was damaged and it is NOT under warranty anymore. Web documentation anywhere?

Two Things

1) We like you will search the Net. To even try you have to Tell us exactly which Ibook. New is New But there are the new G4 12 to 14 inch and New G3 that are still being sold etc. Keep in mind their may be an error in the documentation.

2) I strongly suggest you get an Apple Care Warranty. You will get Tech tool 4 and 2 Extra Years of coverage. It used to be cheaper.... Laptops are much more prone to problems. With a Desktop in a Pinch a new CD rom drive, a new mouse, a new kb etc are easy and cheap. Not so with Notebook computer. As an Example a replcacement CDR is like $200.

In the 4th Year if somthing breaks you have the option of self repair or, in Store... Truth be told though the majority of the repair price is the part, not the Labor.

P.S. I even Like AppleCare on Desktops, Just with them there is more of a toss up sitution, since many more of the parts are more off the shelf (Sans Mother Board and CPU).

Course if I were the Proud owner if mega bucks G5 with an Expansive display I would drop the extra $275 for a full three years piece of mind.
