Human memory test:) Fonts Fractions and Old Keyboards
RE: Human memory test
Fonts Fractions and Old Keyboards:One of my Clients currently using Jaguar 10.28 swears that around 10 years ago her work computer (A Mac if my memory serves me correct) had fractions aka 1/2 and 1/4 etc. on the Keyboard.... Course I do not rememeber Per Se fractions on the keyboard. Curious I fired up out from Applications Utilities KeyCaps and Also looked in word insert Symbol. I saw every symbol but fractions in Zapf Dingbats, Helevetica, Arial, and few other random symbol fornts?? Color me Puzzed. ----------------------------------------- P.S. I remeber virtually every keyboard from the Apple II to Mac Plus etc. I do not rememeber any regular Apple or Mac keyboard and do not remember symbols on the keyboard. i still use an apple extended II with an ADB adapter. i love these keyboards. it may not match but, the tactile feel is worth the anachonistic look.
i'm getting side tracked. no...i've got no fractions on my extended II. nor were there any fractions on the regular old extended. i have an original mac 128k (m0001) running lode runner upstairs...no fractions there. even had a couple of those weird 'ergo' keyboards that split in the middle...none there either. and the 'GS' looking keyboard with the wide powerbutton above the left hand---none there. does she remember which machine she was running? 10 years ago i was running a IIx...my boss was running a IIfx...my cubemate was running a quadra 700...all 3 had the extended II IIRC. maybe she was remembering running a fraction font and typing fractions using keycaps or keyfinder (helvetica fractions is a popular font--screws up in X tho..makes reading web pages loads of fun). |

my extended II works fine with the adapter. i dont have a G5 yet, but i see know reason why it wouldnt work on there as well...its just USB.
as far as fractions go, i use adobe's helvetica fractions and new centrury schoolbook fractions...thats a san-serif and a serif font. cant really think of any others off the top of my head. |

Thanx
I used to use those for Wacomb Tablets but I thought the drivers became extinct in X. Had not checked for a while...
I'll try those Fonts.... {Edit} I surfed around a little. I see that Mice and keyboards are no problem, may not even require Imate drivers... Tablets No Go ![]() Dongles if you are still using Classic Apps fussy for some but work. Last edited by anthlover; 12-01-2003 at 11:17 PM. |

It rings a bell with me too. At this point however, it seems that you need to cut and paste from a display of the entire font.
In Panther you can drag and drop from the 'character palette' from the 'input menu' (the flag icon) ½¼¾ I cannot remember if that is there in Jaguar. The fractions do seem to be there in a lot of the fonts...

hmmm I have looked at a lot of them and found none
Does it matter if there True Type or Type 1 adobe?
The only Fonts Fractions I found at all were New Century School Fractions. There the fractions were not ready made 1/2 or 1/4 etc. The smaller sized numbers were there with a line above them. I fooled around a little by trial and error and typed 1/5. Not really sure how I did that. Any suggestions would be welcome Are there Fonts that do not require switching to the fraction version of that font, or are fractions routintely a Font Subset like Bold or Roman? e.g. Are there Any fonts that include fractions in the Regular version of the font. Lastly prior to OSX it used to require great care removing truetype versions of Fonts that Apple gave, say for Adobe Type 1 versions with same names, is that still an isse or are they treated separtely. On a number of systems I also noticed strange behavior. Word would see some fonts. Keycaps and err international input Keyboard display in Panther would see others. They are Both OSX Native Apps? Also Could they made the Keybaord any smaller

Maybe she had a special keyboard, but that strikes me as pretty strange. No keyboards would waste a whole key (err.. two 1/2 keys) on 2 fractions. There were key-combos that would give you that, however. Those escape me..

none required at all. i just plugged in the adapter, plugged in my keyboard and started typing. running 10.3.1 with no ill effects in any application. too bad about the tablets tho...i have one in a corner collecting dust now ![]() cant help you with the fonts...im in os9 mode today (still trying to figgure out an osx problem with a b/w G3). but, i only use type1 fonts. too many nightmares with truetype fonts and an agfa rip years ago. my fraction versions came with the fontfolio 7 i bought years ago. IIRC they were sorted in with the 'symbol' fonts on the disc...not with the rest of the helveticas....and there were both regular and bold versions. |

Whats the problem with b/w g3
I read your cross post.... Is that you....
Older Systems Not sure when Older stops Require OSX to be installed on the first less then 8 gig Partition of a Drive.... Though you booted in X 10.31.Other then that Jumpers, Master, Slave, and Bad Motherboard ATA controller are always possible though it sounds as if your having trouble seeing part of a drive? **** which is a different kettle of Fish. Are the missing Paritions viewable on another system? Have you run DiskWarrior X over it etc? I tend to install X first and then install Clean Install 9.21 (System whines at you other wise). |

doh...forgot that was another forum. i'll reply here
![]() i'm having trouble seeing the entire 'master' when booted into x. strange beyond my comprehension. as the slave drive is only 6gb, X would necessarily HAVE to be on the first 8. but, just to cover my bases, it is on the first partition. what's odd is i cannot see any of the primary master at all. i'm ruling out physical jumpers (and really any hardware issue at all) because when i boot into os9 nativley (first partition of primary master) i can see all 4 partitons (pri and sla). have not run any X utilities on the missing partitons, as X cannot see it. i have run several in 9 with no errors. i've also run X's disk utility on the PRI-SLA drive that works...no errors there either. Playing around in Key Caps I found that you can make fractions with several fonts. type any number then [option] + [shift] + 1 then any other number. With some fonts the result looks only slightly differnt than a number / a number but it others it shrinks the numbers and stacks them on top of each other.

I was just using fonts from the pull down list in Key Caps in 10.2.8 I don't know if those are True Type or Type 1. Here's a list of the ones I found to work.
Andale Mono Apple Chancery Arial (all versions but Arial Hebrew) Brush Script Century Gothic Chicago Comic Sans MS Copperplate Gothic (Light & Bold) Courier New Curlz MT Didot Edwardian Script ITC Georgia Hoefler Text Impact Lucida Grande Lucida Handwriting New York Palatino Skia Tahoma Times New Roman Trebuchet MS Verdana Zapfino As you can see there are quite a few to choose from. I think all of those are standard with the 10.2 install, but there may be a couple I got elsewhere. |
