move fink's /sw offworld
fyi,
so, i've been gleefully adding the fink toolset to my iron, and was curious how much all that structure held. turns out it's up to >680 MB, and that's a groaner. i like to keep the OS X partition virtually stock, with aliases/symlinks to other partitions. this has provided me well with light backups and disk maintenance. and once i deleted /System and /Library and reinstalled OS X without a hitch. still running on that, in fact. curious, i ditto'd /sw to another partition, rm -rf'd that sucker off / and created a symlink in / to its new home. % ls -l /sw lrwxr-xr-t 1 root admin 31 Jan 21 02:20 /sw -> /Volumes/tang/sw/ all's well so far. installs, updates, man/info pages, tools all seem to work seemlessly. can anyone see any caveats here? -b

Nope; been doing that successfully for months, with a (mostly) dedicated 10 GB partition for fink and other Darwin-y things.
The only thing that really needs to go on the boot partition is XFree86. |
