Trying to make a copy of Panther 1
I was trying to make a copy of Panther Install Disk 1 via Disk Utility. All seemed to be going okay until near the end of the burn. (Was burning the .cdr image, had set to "CD/DVD master" and with encryption "none".)
Then the drawer (Flat Panel iMac) popped open with this message on the screen: "This device has drained its buffer without underwrite protection". So what do I do to avoid this bad ending next try? Last edited by Roy Vincent; 11-28-2003 at 11:17 AM. |

Should work with what you are doing. Have you tried another disk? You might get to waste a couple of CDRs before getting the technique to work properly,
Do a reboot first and then try the burn again (not a simple restart - shutdown, then boot again) test the burn first before doing any other tasks. I'm pretty sure that an underwrite buffer error is due to a burn speed that's too fast. (burns fail with 16x, good with 12x, or maybe the media (CD-R) that you use is not good quality?) You can't adjust the speed with Disk Utility, you would need a third party burning software. If you do a variety of different kinds of CD burns, Toast would be good to purchase, and would handle just about anything you need for burning. |

Thanks. Will try again. Not sure of the quality of the media--was a freebie with purchase of flat panel iMac. Looks like a no-name. But I was able to burned copies of the Jaguar Install disks with the same media. With Panther's Disk Uility, can control speed on some kinds of burns. But not with CD/DVD Master--that I could see. Will look more closely the next time around. |

Shut down. Tried several more times, creating more coasters. Tried to go with read/write instead of CD/DVD Master. No go. Console says the same thing each time, to wit: "Disk Utility: Burn started, Fri Nov 28 22:58:48 2003 Disk Utility: Burning to CD-R media with SAO strategy in SONY CD-RW CRX170E 2.3d via ATAPI. Disk Utility: Requested CD burn speed was max, actual burn speed is 24x. Disk Utility: Burn underrun protection is supported, and enabled. Disk Utility: Write (10), block: 209376, count: 32 -> 3/0C/08 Medium Error, Write error, recovery failed Disk Utility: Burn failed, Fri Nov 28 23:01:29 2003 Disk Utility: Burn sense: 3/0C/08 Medium Error, Write error, recovery failed Disk Utility: Burn error: 0x80020060 The device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection. The device drained its buffer without burn underrun protection." I've found some websites where others are gettng the same error messages both in Jaguar and Panther. There they tried different media--to no avail. They also were able to lower the burn speed--to no avail. With Panther's Disk Utility and burning a disk image, there is no way to lower the burn speed- that I can find. Anybody have any ideas? |

Are you using 700mb cd blanks? We made backups of Panther intall 1 last week and had to buy bigger blanks (at 30 cents each no big deal.) Also, we used an external writer, Toast copy and OS9. (our burner is on a beige G3) Took all of 5 minutes.

Yeah. Bigger blanks is what I'm thinking too. Will give it a go. Thanks |

I bought some new 700 meg CD-Rs. (My Apple retailer doesn't sell anything larger. There are larger ones?) Anyway with the better media (I bought TDK) everything goes fine. The no-name media I got as an extra when I bought the G4 iMac works fine burning from the Finder. But it seems to bog down now when I create a disk image and try to burn that. (Even with a small-content disk image as in the case of Panther Install Disk 3.) Yet when Jaguar came out, I used that same no name media to copy the Jaguar install disks. No problem then. Strange. Re: Cheap Media
Ancient Chinese Proverb: You get what, you pay for.
I buy exclusively TDK or Matsu****a. When I lived in Canada, I used to get blanks exclusivelty from a CD dup house, then the Canadian Government decided that every blank CD was used to copy pirated songs and added a 50 cent per blank tax to everything. Flipside - copying music in Canada is quasi-legal now, but backing up your vacation photos is taxed. Find a brand that your recorder likes, and restrict your purchases to that brand. For more than you ever wanted to know about cd-r's, read http://www.cdrfaq.org/ |

Auto-editing?
Hmmmm -
The auto-antiprofanity-discombobulator seems to have a bias against Japanese companies. Ma - tsu - shi - ta is the correct pronunciation, and it's a fine, upstanding family company. Wonder what else is on the edit list? |

What about Shiitake mushrooms? ( double-i)
Really, I feel ****subo (disappointment) about the ****sukkoi (persistent) ****sureina (rude, discourteous) editing done here without so much as a ****sumon (question) as to wether I made a ****sugen (slip of the `****a` - tongue). Perhaps we should ask for a `josei no ****en kara` (women's opinion) on the edit list. Then ****akemas (prepare) a new, orwellian edit list, with foreign words ****ekishima****a (pointed out) ****sureishima****a (I am leaving now) |
