I'm using OSX 10.2.8 and when I try to open 9 while in 10, it comes up as if 9 is going to start, the bar goes all the way across, everything is fine and just as its about to open 9 it just goes away... no warnings, no messages, nothing... the 9 opening screen just goes away and that's it - WHY????????
I can't afford new software so I am having to restart into 9, then restart back into 10 over and over again all day long, this is DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!!!! |

Unless you're opening an app, that's the intended behaviour. Classic isn't for running an OS, it's for running apps intended for that OS.
Can you run 9 apps? Try running the OS 9 Stickies app. |

How do you know that Classic quits? What happens in the Classic pref pane when you Click on the Start button? After the Classic opening window disappears, does the top button (bottom half of that pref window) then say Start, or Stop? If Classic quits by itself, that button will read Start (ie, Classic is not running) If the button reads Stop, then classic must be running. Any evidence that OS 9 is running disappears from the Dock after completion of Classic startup.
You can also go to the terminal, type top, and look at the list of running processes. If there's one called TruBlueEnv, that is, in fact, Classic running! No TruBlueEnv, Classic is not running. Let us know what you find. |

ahaha! I know it quits because when I try to open a 9 application it tries to start.
HOWEVER, after posting this message, I went to System preferences and clcik on 9 and then rebuilt 9's desk top from there and low and behold it opened from there, I am not sure if will open from clicking a 9 application icon but at this point I do not care, at least I do not have to shut down open up, shut down, open up... YEAH!!!!!! |

Well it sounds like it's working for you now, but I'm not sure there was ever a problem. The original post describes exactly what is supposed to happen. Classic Startup is an application located in your /System/Library/CoreServies directory. It's job is to start the Classic Enviornmet and quit. Once started, classic runs as a background process, until it is called to the front by a classic application. With Classic running, open Process Viewer (located in /Applications/Utilities) and look for a process called TrueBlueEnviornment. That's the background for Classic. Anyway, I just wanted to clarify.

Start at the beginning. Launch System Preferences (go to the Apple menu and choose System Preferences). Click on the 'Classic' tab. Make sure you have a Classic System Folder selected. If you don't, that's the problem. If you do, then click the 'Start' button. What happens?

First of all what kind of Mac do you have? 2nd, when you opened System Preferences - Classic, was there any System Folders listed? If so, how many? 3rd, Did you recently partition or change the config of any of your drives, including the HD's name? That message tells me that Mac OSX can't find the location of your Classic System Folder, but that it once could. First, verify this.. double click on your Hard Drive. There should be a folder called "Applications", one called "Applications (Mac OS 9)", one called "System", and one called "System Folder" (there will be other folders as well). Verity that these 4 are present, then open System Preferences, click on the Classic tab and tell me exactly what's listed?

First of all I appreciate the help cameranerd. Okay heres is what I have. I only have ''applications'' and ''system''. I do not have'' applications Mac OS9" nor do I have ''system folder''. The computer I have is a OSX. Which I bought off a good friend. I think what could be the problem when he downloaded his things from this computer to his Apple lap top he screwed something up. I do not know a heck of a lot about computers. And am having to learn by trial and error. I am thinking could it be that it is behind the fire wall?
So anyways this is what I have. Sure do appreciate this.

Eureka. The reason you can't open classic apps is because you don't have classic installed on your computer. You need to get a Mac OS 9 install CD and install it. What kind of Mac do you have (ie: eMac, G4, iBook)? An OS 9 CD should've come with it, even if you're running OSX. Did you friend give you the original CD's that came with the machine?

You DO NOT have to re-install. Find the disk labled "iMac Mac OS 9 Install". Then install that on your System. To do so, you may have to boot from the CD. Put the CD in the machine, restart, and hold down the 'C' key while the machine boots up. The machine will boot to an OS 9 desktop, double click the install Mac OS icon, and you can folow the prompts from there to install OS 9. After installation is sucessful, reboot and hold down the 'X' key. The machine will boot back into OSX and you should be okay from there. Once finished you will have a complete Classic System available. Good luck.

Oh boy. 9.0! This is going to be a little more work than I thought. Okay, you'll have to install Mac OS 9 as instructed above. But before you do you'll have to download 2 free updates. Mac OS 9.1, get it here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75103 and Mac OS 9.2.2, get it here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75186 Download the updates and put them inside your main HD window. Then start from your OS9 CD (by holding down the "C" key), and install Mac OS 9. Restart and don't hold down any keys. The setup asistant will launch as if you're setting up a new computer. Press the Command(the key next to the space bar with the apple on it) key and the "Q" key to bypass the setup assistant. Or you can go through page by page and fill it out if you want. Once you get to the OS9 desktop, run the 9.1 updater. Restart and run the 9.2.2 updater. Then restart again and hold down the X key. Your machine should boot back into OSX. If you run into any problems, let me know.

Cameranerd74 : you missed one update for OS 9 - refer to THIS PAGE for a total of 3 updates required to complete the update from OS 9.0 to 9.2.2.
HERE is the LINK for the largest one (from 9.1 to 9.2.1). The 9.2.2 update requires 9.2.1. |

Oh shoot. You are exactly right. I forgot about that one. Thanks for reminding me DeltaMac.
chittybanbang: 1. Install Mac OS 9.0 2. Update to Mac OS 9.1 3. Update to Mac OS 9.2.1 4. Update to Mac OS 9.2.2 5. Reboot into OSX 6. Enjoy Classic 7. Yell "YIPPIE SKIPPY!" and kick your heels together
