Disk Utility can't unmount disk?

I have a couple of Internals I wanted to run DU on...the first is my everyday Disk; the second is a backup.

For the first disk I got the "can't unmount" disk warning, and figured it was because I had documents open on that disc. Closed the docs, and proceeded normally.

The other Disc has no documents open and I still get this warning.

Why would this be?

thank you,

Why that is, I haven't a clue. But I wonder if trying to unmount those cursed disks can be done from Safe Boot mode. Or is that a silly idea?

I do not know. I rebooted and then repeated and THIS time, repair ran without sqwawking.

but I just noticed my sidebar items are gone...all of those from one of the two internals.

not sure if this is a bad sign or not

I have seen reports that the Side Bar issue you mention occurs when using Simbl in 10.8.

If so, you might try deleting the: ColorfulSidebar.bundle in Library / Application Support / SIMBL / Plugins /

If not in 10.8, I (too) remain confused.

fortunately, the second of my 2 internal back up drives appears to be behaving. I found enough space on another, internal, to back up all my data, including current user.

Then, I guess I need to fire up DW...

Weird..these Hitachi Jupiters were highly recommended...3-yr warranty and dang if it isn't just about 3 years!
