All My Apple Apps Crash (always) any ideas??

Hi,
I can't think of anything I installed prior to the problem but most of my apple apps are crashing, usually immediately. Safari crashes whenever I type in a dialogue box (google etc.) Mail/address book crash upon launch. I thought perhaps fonts so I was going to replace the fonts folder with one from one of my other OS X machines.... but I see quite a few font folders. The machine is A Quicksilver 733 running High End audio/video apps mostly (pro-tools TDM/Logic/FCP). Any Ideas?
PS: I have wiped/reinstalled all elements from safari MANY times (plist etc.)

have you tried a full blown format and reinstallation of OS X?

If so, i'm guessing it's a hardware issue...

examine the crash logs in:

/Users/you/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/appname.crash.log

for some clues

Console

I second Merv's suggestion to look at the crash logs.
You might want to use the "Console" utility (Applications/Utilities/Console) to look at the logs.

But even easier is to set the preferences in Console to enable crash reporting and display crash logs automatically. And then you will be automatically presented with the crash log when an application crashes.

All My Apple Apps Crash (always) any ideas??

Hi,
Thanks alot for your interest in helping me with my issue. Posting the logs slipped my mind oops (duuhhh). Ive only been able to extract (bits of) info from them that I can actually comprehend a few times. Is there a great tutorial anywhere that would shed some light on these cryptic console messages? here they are and Thank You in advance.

No - but it's not really very hard. All you have to do is ignore all the numbers etc and scan looking for names you recognize.
Doing this with the logs you posted shows that the crashes all have something to do with Address Book.
So it is likely that one or more of your Address Book files is corrupt and causing the problem.

I'm not all that familar with the files used by Address Book but I see that there is a file called "Address Book.addressbook" in the folder Library/Addresses/

First, quit all apps that might use Address Book.
Then try moving that file elsewhere (e.g. to the Desktop) and then restarting your apps to see if it makes a difference.

You could also search these forums and the main macosxhints site for mention of Address Book problems.

the files/dir to move...

Code:
dir ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
file ~/Library/Preferences/AddressBookMe.plist
file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
move those somewhere memorable then try and launch address book

i don't think there is a need to reinstall the app. at least, you haven't demonstrated so.

there isn't an installer for address book. but there is a facility called pacifist that can peel apps out of the OS installer. but, you'd need to apply any updates that are outstanding and the whole thing can get rather hairy.

why do you think you need to re-install the address book app?

It is more likely to be a problem with the data files that are read by Address Book than with the application itself. So you need to be sure to remove those files as well. In which case, why not do as suggested above and just move the files aside (e.g. to the Desktop) and see if that fixes the problem. Do this with the files listed by Merv as well as the one I mentioned. Likely no need to reinstall.

Hi,
I gave it a shot but im still crashing away...
I tried isync to see if the contact info from my other working computers on .mac would replace the potentially corrupted info on the 733 but that failed with a crash as well.
By the way... my alternate "admin" user (login) works fine.

Re: Re: data files

The problem may be a corrupted preference file.
Try deleting "com.apple.AddressBook.plist" . You could aslo drag the Preferences folder from your User/yourname/Library folder to the Desktop and then restart to rule out other preference file corruption.

I have moved my entire user/library/prefrences folder to the desktop and re-logged in. The problem persists BUT! when I log in as another user all apps work fine. It must not be the prefs folder but something else in my user folder... any ideas of where to look??

what about dir ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ ?

it was listed above as being an object to move. have you moved it out of the way and tried to launch address book? you didn't specify that you completed this endeavor.

Try a new user account!

If you think it may be a preference file, or user related software issue an easy way to confirm this would be to create a new user account. Create a new admin user, and log in as that brand new account. Try using your apple applications then. Does the problem still persist? If the problem goes away you can more safely assume its something related to the user and not the application or the OS. Then you can start removing pref files and such.
