iMac Memory Installation

While I think the way iMac memory is made accessible is clever, given that the iMacs aren't really openable, I will say that it's tough. There's a 1" wide piece of kevlar film (really strong stuff) looped around the memory carrier that is to be pulled to unplug the installed memory. It requires more force than I can exert on a slippery tape between thumb and finger so I had to resort to pulling on it with a pair of pliers. Then, following the instructions, you put the larger chips where the originals were and the originals below them (as you view the face down iMac). When both are inserted, the diagram shows pushing each pair back in with your thumbs. First time I tried that, I got three bongs repeated when I restarted. They have to be pushed in really hard, so I ended up using the female end of a socket wrench extension that was the right size to do it. Success, but not trivial. If you don't have really strong hands (I have arthritis) let Apple install them even though they're much cheaper from Crucial.

This is what technically-inclined sons are for. I have 2* (and arthritis in my hands and sundry other places).

* One for hardware and one for software, although the software one is Linux/Windows with an irrational hate for all things Apple. <sigh>

I'm afraid that I'm the outlier in my family tree: Great Grandfather a Pharmacist, Grandfather an MD, Father an Organic Chemist, Moi (Mechanical Engineer), brother in sales, son a Microbiologist, and two daughters with MBAs. No help there; it's usually the reverse.

Make sure that one inherits all your hardware.

Really? What kinds of fraud are we talking about that will affect a seller on eBay?
