OS X vs OS X Server

Hello all.

I have a B/W G3 that I'd like to use for a mail/web server. I plan on learning/using php/mysql. I'll probably be using a commercial Mac SQL GUI product.

What advantages do I gain by installing OS X Server, rather than straight OS X?

I was planning on using X and then installing any needed software.

Thanks for any insight.

It doesn't sound like you'd have too much to gain from Server. Just search around here for information on PostFix and qpopper, and the email should be dealt with.

The main web advantage Server has is the WebObjects deployment license. Maybe the ACGI Enabler, but that shouldn't matter to you if you use perl or python for your cgi's.

Thanks for the info Craig. I'm also exploring Tenon's iTools for added functionality under X.

Server Admin app

the apacche httpd.conf file is tweaked differently for OSX Server & Client. this may irritate you more or less depending on how much apache you know. also OSX Server has a lot of other .conf files for apache, etc because they are what the Server Admin GUI admin tool are. the Server Admin on Server overwrites your default configs. server is $1000, yea big chunk. on the other side of the coin the Server Admin tool is great, it integrates all services into one app. but if you are not going to need such a GUI, then there is no gain there. you can do all the stuff on client w/out the GUI, but it is nice to have.

Thanks meancode. Based on yours and Craig's reply, I'm leaning toward X. I have no Apache experience and some kind of GUI would be nice. However, I have no problem getting dirty with the code.
