IE was working fine until I downloaded the Toast update. Don't know if this has anything to do with the following problem, but it is the only addition to my system other than the Apple Java update.
Problem: When I type in, www.worshipcentral.org, or http://www.worshipcentral.org, or www.x1703.org, or http://www.x1703.org, I get the following error message from IE: "Unhandled File Type Internet Explorer doesn't know how to handle the type of file you have selected. You can choose to save this file to your disk or you can configure a Helper Application for this fil. MIME Type: application/gzip/compressed File Name: I can type in any other .org domain and the page displays as you would expect. I get the same error message even when these URLs appear as a link. In trying to fix this problem, I deleted the IE app and all related files, did a restart, then transferred the IE app from another machine. No luck. I have no idea what is causing this to happen. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

stefeb, I don't get those error messages in IE or Mozilla, but I looked at the code for the worshipcentral.org home page and it's quite a jumble of javascript and I'm not sure what else--quite a complicated mess for such a simple home page.
If all is working well on IE for other web pages, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Phil |

Thanks Phil.
I cleaned up the code for worshipcentral.org, but the problem still persists. So, once again, I removed all traces of IE from my computer, both Classic and OSX versions. Then, I reinstalled them from the OSX update CD using Pacisfist, but the problem still remains. There must be some preference for IE that is hidden on my computer, or something. In any event, the problem has sort of pushed me to use OW as my primary browser (not a bad thing). Thanks for you help.

deleting an application is mostly futile when try to affect its configuration, as those parameters are removed from the app itself.
internet helper apps and such are found in this file: % ll ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist -rw------- 1 you staff 213k Mar 1 09:25 /Users/you/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconfig.plist if you delete that file, you will effectively give IE, and other apps, a new outlook on their existence. you will, also, delete a host of other things that may need to be re-entered somewhere. perhaps, quit all apps that have their fingers in that file, rename that file, like below, and try IE. Code:
cd ~/Library/Preferences/ mv com.apple.internetconfig.plist com.apple.internetconfig.plist.save |

Thank you. I am now a happy man (doesn't take much).
I did as you said, and now IE is behaving as it did before the weirdness.
