office x never quits
it seems that whenever i close any office x app it hangs and requires a force quit. i have update to 10.1.3 and have updated officeas well. what's even more strange is that this problem goes away when i disconnect from the internet. is there a fix for this? i don't want to have to disconnect everytime i use office.
thanks |

Firewall?
I had the same problema and isolated it to my firewall. The microsoft database daemon checks on the local network to see if other copies of orifice are in use w/ the same serial number. It should do this at startup and quit. If you have a firewall then you get a hanging spinning beachball of death. The best workaround is to bar the computer from accessing the internet, using TCP, from ports 3000-4000. I use Brickwall which is easy to customize for this. I actually found that blocking 3100-3900 does the trick, although this varies somewhat, just check it out.

Clueless
Absolutely no idea, if you're not using a firewall then I'm stumped. Best tell the minions at Microsoft about it, although they weren't much help for me. |

I periodically have this problem when a PPP connection closes unexpectedly. So unexpectedly, in fact, that OS X fails to realize the connection has closed. In that case, if an Office app is running, it will simply not quit without being forced. Then my Mac will hang on logout, forcing a reboot.
To work around this, I make sure PPP is disconnected before I quit Entourage (or any other Office app, for that matter). This behavior does not surface if my PPP connection has been manually closed down--only when OS X has failed to notice (which is to say, nearly every time I drop carrier). I'm on a dual-processor G4 450, 640MB RAM. Andy |
