Mac won't boot past blue screen OR boot in safe mode

Hi, my macbook recently froze and I had to restart it. After I did that, it wouldn't boot past the blue screen. Solutions on the Apple website suggest booting in safe mode, which I can't do. When I try to boot in safe mode, the screen stays on white w/ the apple logo (no loading icon), and then eventually restarts itself. I have a lot of school documents on my computer as well as personal stuff that I would really hate to lose, if anyone could move me in the right direction to fix this problem, I would be eternally grateful! And if the laptop is toast (I don't believe it is..), any tips on how to back up my files while the computer is in this state would be really helpful!
Thanks in advance!!

Have you tried resetting the PRAM?

Apple Support Document:

Do you have an OS X install disk? If so, can you enter the setup by holding "option" after the chime and selecting the OS X DVD?
