I have turned off everything I can find network related - all the sharing stuff, I even mod /etc/hostconfig to disable anything not caught elsewhere (like QTSS). I wish I could find a command I could use to watch whats happening - what the heck is trying to connect out....

BTW - LittleSnitch already running... ooops.... no it isn't... I run it full time on my main system - just never installed on the iBook... that would be helpful wouldn't it installing now...

It sounds like your machine is doing something similar to this:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106729

Are you absolutely sure you don't have a relevant login item that's causing this?

One of the first things I did was delete EVERYTHING in the LoginItems PrefPane... it is bare.

Just restarted with LittleSnitch ... not reporting anything.. no outgoing indication using default install LittleSnitch. To me that just sez that whatever is calling out is using one of the predefined generic rules that LittleSnitch uses...

I just deleted all the rules from LittleSnitch so it would trigger on ANY outgoing connection. Upon restart - no LittleSnitch warnings... thats odd...

I've been thinking about this and it isn't odd insofar as the connect dialog isn't an outgoing connection until you enter the address and click ok. Up till that point it's merely the first step in making a connection.

You mentioned that you'd removed all your login items. Have you checked:

"/Library/StartupItems"
"/System/Library/StartupItems"
"~/Library/StartupItems"

for any non-standard items?

Have you recently modified any of the following:

/etc/rc.conf
the vfs.nfs.nfs_privport setting

alternatively, is there an 'automount' folder in /Library/StartupItems?

The above was taken from:

Startup items was one of the first things I cleaned.

After anothert restart I am now seeing a LittleSnitch dialog trying to connect to DirectoryService at 239.255.255.253 port 427 which I am pretty sure is Rendezvous. Then another one Lookupd wants to connect to my DNS server (on a different Linux box. These continuously popup for "Lookupd" even after dismissing.

Lookupd is one of the settings that's incorporated into Little Snitch from the outset and defaults to allowing any and all connections so it isn't surprising that it's throwing up multiple requests.

lookupd DNS and svrloc requests should be benign, i.e., not invoke a "connect to server..." dialog.

safe boot == no dialogs ?

what about normal boot, and then shift-key on login (to prevent login items) ?

Perhaps this isn't a problem with the iBook at all. Has anything else on your network changed in the last couple of days. You didn't specify what your setup is, and I know very little about network configuration, but this might be worth checking out.

Shift at Login screen = Connect dialogs

Safe boot = Connect dialogs

My network has not changed recently. If it had I suspect I woould be seeing the same problem on the other 2 macs that are connected full time to the network.

One last thought. Have you tried disconnecting one of your other macs and attaching the laptop to that cable? I know this is clutching at straws but it's the last thing I can think of.

The same exact thing is happening to me all the time now. I get the same exact prompt on login. I have to manually quit lsregister from the Activity Monitor. Did anyone find a proper solution to this problem?

I got rid of the "Previous System" by doing a terminal command I found on the apple forums. Do a search for lsregister, and you'll find it. I'm now going to try resetting the lsregister database. We'll see if that solves the problem

Whenever I start it up, before I get to the Desktop - the Connect to Server dialog appears... several times, stacked on on top of the other. You can not type in the fields, cancel, or connect with the dialogs. You can move the windows around, but thats about it. Usually there are about 5 stacked one on top of the other. The Finder will hang for up to a min before it appears behind the Connect to Server dialogs. There is no way that I have found to get rid of them, and I can not figure out what is causing this oddity!!!

Here's a bit of troubleshooting I have tried that has failed:
* checked to make sure I didn't have any aliases to my other machines on my LAN in a startup phase somewhere.
* logged out and back in as another user, connect dialogs remain
* kill Finder
* perused top and process manager for suspicious processes. I actually found a few processes that looked suspicious called "lsregister". I killed one of them and sure enough one of the Connect dialogs disappeared, then 3 new ones blossomed. I did a search for lsregister, but can't seem to find any info on it.
* deleted netinfo db and .AppleFirstRun (whatever its called) in single-user mode then booted, thereby creating a new user and netinfo db.
* repair permissions

.... all of those have failed.

Has any one ever heard of anything like this????

EDIT - I did find this similar problem, but no solution. Read the comments (small txt link, lower right corner)
http://radio.weblogs.com/0100148/2002/09/25.html

Do you have anything installed that will require a server update? Such as Konfabulator's Weather or Stock widget? Maybe MSNmessenger or ICQ has loaded (if your use those services) and it's trying to connect.

Now your connected to the internet, I assume it's via cable modem or something, right? Maybe somewhere along' the lines you may of checked something you didn't want checked.

Try opening the System Preferences > Networking > Built-in Ethernet
and click on PPP or PPPoE (they are under the two drop down menu's, next to TCI/IP) Towards the bottom you should see a button called PPP Options or PPPoE Options

The window that drops down should have several options in there, one of them said "Connect automatically when needed" if it's checked, then uncheck it. This should stop your system from connecting to the internet, if you want to connect, you'll have to do it manually from the networking status on the menu bar.

If you don't see this, then opening the System Preferences > Networking > Built-in Ethernet
and click on PPP or PPPoE. and look for "Show PPPoE status in menu bar"

Good luck.
