Terminal displaying completely random computer name?
Hey everyone, new to the site, but I think I will be spending much more time here as I begin to tinker more and more with my new MBP.
So this morning I opened my terminal to ssh into my home router so I could use some sites that are normally blocked by the excessively oppressive firewall at work, but when I the terminal came up, I noticed the computer name (or at least I think that's what I'm thinking of... the part before the colon) is completely different from what it normally is and what I have it set as in System Preferences>Sharing. Right now, it's displaying "wea46499:~ connor$" and my computer name is set as "Connors MacBook Pro" in my sharing preferences. I read that it could be due to a .bash_profile or .bashrc file in /~ but I have checked and I don't have those. I do have a .profile file, but I don't know what should be in it because I installed MacPorts and it seems to have changed the contents of the .profile file. Can someone shed some light? Thanks much. That is probably your companies dns name for that ip-address.
Try Code:
hostname then check that with dns Code:
host "whatever hostname said" Code:
host "ip from last host command"

Welcome to the forums! What you report could be due to “reverse DNS”. Have a look at my post in http://discussions.apple.com/thread....readID=1418905
