Unable To Upgrade To 10.5.7

i have an emac, i was told i dont have enough memory to use 10.5 at an apple store but have been using it for a year now. i think its performance may be better with more memory, it does take like 3 minutes to restart. my problem is after downloading 10.5.7 from apple.com(which takes hours) the .dmg wont open, im unsure of the prompt it gave me. is there somewhere else i can download it from or what else can i do? heres some of my specs

Model Name: eMac
Model Identifier: PowerMac4,4
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
Processor Speed: 1 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.6.4f1

I would upgrade to the full 1GB of ram for 10.5, what message do you get once upgrade starts? and you do have a copy of 10.5 DVD. it is not free.

It's easy to check what the prompt was, just try to open the already-downloaded .dmg again, and write it down.

It's possible that you downloaded the 10.5.7 Update and were not running 10.5.6 (in other words, the immediately-previous version of OS X). If you're not running 10.5.6, then you need to download the 10.5.7 Combo Update.

You can run Software Update from your computer. This will select the correct update.

First of all, you don't need to buy the RAM from Apple--they overcharge for it. 512 MB DIMM modules for your eMac will cost between $20 and $30 each, so two of them should run between $40 and $60 for a full gigabyte.

Second of all, you don't need to pay someone else to install it--it's a user-installable part.

Sorry if I missed something above, but why don't you just update to 10.5.8 via Software Update? (No need to do the 10.5.7 update first)

Apple provides single 'point' updaters, that update x to x+1; and also COMBO updaters (as mentioned in earlier posts), which updater any version to version z.
You can donwnload the 10.5.8 Combo installer for 10.5.8 fromthe Apple website, which will update any version of Leopard to 10.5.8.

If you have 10.5.6, and Apple's Software Update feature is offering you 10.5.8, perhaps you should take it?

Trevor gave you a link in Post #5 to an Apple Support document that gives you detailed instructions, with pictures, on how to put memory into your eMac.

If your eMac is on one of the clear plastic swivel stands that Apple sold for the eMac, that stand will be blocking the access door. The stand has to be removed first.
