Question Print Center Empty

I have a Powerbook G3 Pismo, 500mhz, 640 MB RAM and 48 GB hard drive.

I am totally stumped because the Print Center shows NO printers available to select. None at all!

It does however show "Epson USB" as a category, but still no printers in this or any other category.

I am all up-to-date with the 10.1.2 combo update and have downloaded the latest Epson drivers from the Epson site which also included my Stylus Photo 790 (European model... I live in Munich Germany).

I have already gone the extra step of plugging the printer directly into the #1 USB port on the computer rather than in plug #2 or into my Belkin USB dock

Has anyone else had this dilemma? Any suggestions/solutions? Is a total clean install necessary? and if so will it work?

Jeff Hands

PS:
Don't know if it's related, but in order to install OS-X in the first place, I had to remove my extra RAM (a 512 MB chip) then install OS-X and then re-install the RAM. I know it seems crazy but I read it on another forum and nothing else worked.

Re: Print Center Empty

In looking over the list of supported Epson printers on Apple's site and the addenda at versiontracker.com, I don't see the Stylus Color 790 listed. Versiontracker lists a 780 and the Apple site lists a Stylus Color 777. Maybe there's just no driver for your printer, although you might try that 777 and 780 and see if they'll work.

You might also check in the Print Center Add Printer menu to check that pop-up menu listing USB Printer; there's sometimes an Epson Printer option there for Epson drivers. I wasn't able to choose the Epson printer for my wife's 777 until I moved from USB Printer to the Epson printer option.

my RAM chip

I don't know the brand of the RAM but I bought it from Other Word Computing where I've had nothing but good experience with their products and sercvies... I'll see if I can find out what brand of RAM it is and let you know. (a little too busy today)

Smile SUCCESS!

Oh the joy of multiple operating systems!

I changed my startup disk to the volume that has my OS 9.2.2

While there (in OS 9) I tried to make the printer work (it just came back from repair after being gone for 2.5 months).

Oddly, the Chooser had Apple talk activated... I don't know why. I deactivated Apple Talk (then the Chooser crashed) and then I restarted. The printer then worked flawlessly un OS 9.

Then I went back to OS-X as my start-up. When I opened a document in Word, it automatically found my printer, I didn't even have to into the Print Center.

I AM NOW PRINTING! HURRAY!

Thanks for your comments.I hope my experience here can help someone else.
Best regards,

Jeff Hands
