Disabling Private Browsing Safari 4
I was able to remove Private Browsing from Safari 3 but am unable to find out how to remove it from version 4.
I have Snow Leopard and have installed Xcode Tools. Please help. |

What is your purpose in removing Private Browsing?
You realize that it merely automates something which can easily be done manually?

Let me guess... The goal is to be able to go to a publicly accessible computer (in a library, for example), and turn off Private Browsing, so you can come back in a day or two and harvest any information left behind?

... or perhaps prevent students from hiding their improper use of the school's computers.

I am a married man and want to stay that way. Private Browsing is a very big temptation for all of us married men.

Point of Order: The man asked for help. His motives are not our business, either offer help or keep your comments to yourself.
That being said, I'm not sure how to remove private browsing either, sorry...

I didn't see anyone judging or lecturing.

Private browsing simply stops Safari from saving pages to the History, and to the cache. As has been said, there's nothing to stop you from deleting those files from the History and cache manually. If you think that you can't trust yourself not to use Private Browsing, just because it's there, and not to visit sites of dubious morality, then I think your best solution to this problem lies outside making adjustments to the User Interface. But then again, if you are going to visit sites of which your wife might not approve, then having Private Browsing is a good thing! Last edited by benwiggy; 09-24-2009 at 02:53 AM. |

If we can't figure out how to get ride of private browsing you might try this solution: make sure you have a standard user. Then, from the admin user, turn web logging on. This should make it so your wife can see your history any time she/you want (if that's the aim of this project anyway...)

I think there are also other options with regard to Parental Controls in System Prefs, or using something like openDNS.org, or even configuring your router to restrict access to certain sections of the internet.

I would recommend installing legitimate "spy software" on your computer, directed toward yourself, giving your wife full access to what is logged. There may be some controversy over software programs such as Spector Pro (http://www.macspysoftware.com/spector-pro-mac.htm) which has in the past, I believe, been accused of sending an unnecessary amount of logged information directly to their own servers, but in any case the idea still stands. I admire your efforts and openness regarding the situation.

You people actually share a computer with your wife??? That would just suck. It's bad enough having two people in the kitchen - I can't imagine two people on the same computer.
Interesting note about the conspiracy theorists though. I had assumed he wanted to spy on his kids, rather than rip off people in the library. |
