Burning subtitles with video? Best software?

Hi

I tried burning srt subtitles together with an avi file yesterday with Toast, so they will play on my external DVD player. It worked fine but there is no way to control the size and font of the subtitles and it was hard for me to read them as they used no "plate". So against a white background they were invisible and small. I tried a software called Submerge but it only outputs mov files and the export to avi option gives Errors.

Isn't there an alternative to Toast in creating good video discs (divx or dvd) with configureable subtitle options?

Thanks.

Doesn't iMovie import AVI files? You can then use the Editing/Titles function to insert your subtitles.

Didn't try iMovie. Seems to work fine. Also tried Miyu, even better.

On the latest version of Leopard, QuickTime X can give you excellent results (although there are still no subtitle size configuration options, they're plenty large):

1) Download Perian (a codec pack which allows you to open up .avi files and such in QuickTime) http://www.perian.org/

2) Make sure your .avi and .srt are in the same folder, and are named identically (except for the extension of course.)

3) Open the .avi up in QuickTime

4) Choose File -> Save for Web, and only select the "Computer" option.

That should give you plenty large subtitles, while maintaining the original quality of the file. It'll take a while to convert, but when you're done you'll have a hard-subbed file with large subtitles.

If you're not on Snow Leopard, check out Video Monkey (the code of which I believe was taken from the old, now dead, VisualHub):
