Tiger to Snow Leopard: Is it true?

I read in several places that you can use the $29 dollar upgrade disk to do a direct upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I know apple says you have to buy the box set if you have tiger. But I can save so much just buying the upgrade disk. But I dont want to waste $29 on something I can't use. So is it true? Has anyone done this? If so how did it go?

Yes it is true. The $29 disk is an Install disc. Not an upgrade disk. I successfully installed tonight. No major issues. All my apps worked. My customizations stayed the same. I had to upgrade two apps, and I lost two screensavers that I forgot about long ago.

It's worked for me over the past couple of days.

You can go to Disk Utilities after you boot to the install disc and do an Erase for a full clean install (I just prefer a fresh start, while I think others have upgraded).

There's also a YouTube video out there with instructions (username something "bully" I think).

Vis....you are correct I did an upgrade. Quite unintentional however. Like I said though everything is going well. I'm only 5.5 hours into it, so we shall see.

How did you do it Mastamind? Did you just insert the disk, double-click Install Mac OS X and it worked? I'm gonna document the process and make a PDF guide on how to do it which I will quite likely post here!

The $29 disc is an upgrade, meaning it doesn't have an option to wipe out your hard drive. Some people like to do a clean install, but I didn't want to lose any applications, files, data, etc. So this worked perfectly for me. Everything's still in place...but in Snow Leopard now.
I made the jump from Tiger to Snow Leopard, which seems to be controversial for some people for legal/ethical reasons. The way I look at it, Apple knew exactly what they were doing when they created this. There aren't a lot of Tiger users out there, so the loss of revenue is minimal. Their goal is to get everyone on Snow Tiger before the release of Windows 7. To force the Tiger users to pay for the $170 box set would only keep them from upgrading. By letting the word "slip out" that you can use the cheaper upgrade, they're pretty much making sure everyone's up on Snow Leopard by the end of October.

I am in the same situation. I would like to install Snow leopard from Tiger. So i far as i read in this post, they will be no issues if i buy the 29$ (well actually for me is 29 euros which is 43 dollars, you lucky americans...hehe), Disk Utility>Erase all and install Snow Leopard. Is that right?

I think charging 139$ for the full box is asking too much. Don't care for Iworks, really.

Er, well my copy was able to do just that, via Disk Utility on the install disk. Exited DU and the clean install went ahead as normal.

You call it an install disk, the first post called it an upgrade disk. That's why I'm concerned about getting a runaround with terminology at the apple store. I don't have time Monday to screw around with debating upgrade vs install in a store. I remember when products had part numbers, I'm old fashioned, I miss those days....

I wouldn't worry too much. AFAIK, there is only one disk. Just ask for a copy of Snow Leopard. Either a single license, or a Family Pack of five, if you need that many licenses. I have installed mine over an existing Leopard install and done a complete wipe and "clean" install. Flawless on both occasions, using the same disk.

Yes, the Install disc is legally an Upgrade disc. But it works as an Install disc. As far as anybody has ever reported in the Mac press or elsewhere, there is only one disc, and you can call it whichever (install or upgrade) that you want, since there's no ambiguity--there's only one possibility.

No possibility of a runaround, since there's only one choice. (Well, I guess there's also the Family Pack, but that does have a distinct name.)

The disc does have an Apple part number. If you really need to know what it is, you should be able to search your preferred search engine for it. But it may change soon, if they make, for example, a 10.6.2 disc, or a 10.6.3 disc, etc.

LOL, about a month or so ago at an apple store I asked if I could upgrade my mbp running 10.4.11 to snow leopard. I brought in a printout of my system profile.

After much explaining to a 'genius' asking if it would be possible, and that genius taking my printout somewhere into the back of the store, she returned and said, "sure."

Somehow I didn't trust her and left without the upgrade. It's reassuring to come across this thread. Maybe that someone in the back of the apple store gave the 'genius' correct information!

I am really fine with Tiger, and it does everything I need it to do. But the big kicker is I can't use an iPhone 4 with it. I've read(In addition to this thread)/watched videos that you can in fact upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard, however; there are some details that I cannot find concrete information about. I will list them below.

1. If I buy the $30 SL disk, pop it in, and click install, will all of my files Music/Pictures/Documents etc. from Tiger still be there when it's done?

2. If I buy the $30 SL disk will my Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie, and all those other programs from Tiger still work ok, or do I need to buy the $170 SL pack? The only thing I really use is the iPhoto on Tiger and it works just fine for me now.

The only reason I am going to upgrade is for the IP4, so thanks for any help in advance. Lastly, to anyone who did do the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard with the $30 disk, I would appreciate any feedback post installation about your experience.
