packages (yafc) not in fink

I just upgraded to a new MBP and leopard. I deleted my /sw directory and installed fink 0.9. So fast. Then I tried to install 'yafc', a good command-line FTP client. It's not there. The fink package list says it should be there in the stable tree. What do I do?

fink tells me that yafc is available to install. Can you tell us in a LOT more detail why you think it's not there? Can you show us the commands you issued, and the error message, for example?

Also, seeing your /sw/etc/fink.conf might be helpful.

Sure. Searching for yafc in finkcommander yields nothing. Issuing the command:

sudo fink install yafc

gives the message:

Information about 2521 packages read in 1 seconds.
Failed: no package found for specification 'yafc'!

"SelfUpdateMethod: point". You're still using only the original package collection that came with the binary installer. There's also an incorrect timestamp on some file in the installer that prevents even some of the included packages from being seen. 'fink index -f' clears that latter issue. The various types of 'selfupdate'ing can download the latest package collection (many hundred new packages and/or versions have been contributed since the binary installer was assembled).

Of those 'various types,' which selfupdate method should I use?

I ran 'fink index -f'. It doesn't change the number of packages found.

I would recommend setting your SelfUpdateMethod to rsync.

'fink selfupdate-rsync' is the easiest way to change the setting (does some sanity-checking in addition to changing the SelfUpdate: token). At any future time, 'fink selfupdate' (or I assume the analogous menu item in FinkCommander) will continue to use the existing selected method.

Thanks, selfupdate rsync gave me 2300 packages that weren't there before.

If I remember correctly, after running 'selfupdate', you're supposed to run 'update-all.' That now gives me trouble:

> sudo fink update-all
Information about 4340 packages read in 0 seconds.

fink needs help picking an alternative to satisfy a virtual dependency. The
candidates:

(1) transfig-graphicx: Convert xfig objs with -graphicx (-epsfig is deprecated)
(2) transfig-epsfig: Convert xfig objs with -graphicx (-epsfig is deprecated)

Pick one: [1]
Can't resolve dependency "fink (>= 0.28.0)" for package
"gettext-tools-0.14.5-4" (no matching packages/versions found)
Exiting with failure.

Not sure if it is "stable" or "unstable"

I have both in my config, and I see that file you are looking for
