I have a Powerbook G4 connected to a MacBook via ethernet. I want to be able to share large files through the ethernet connection. The problem I'm having is when I try to connect the 2 ( Go > Connect to Server > ****-****s-powerbook-g4-15.local) the connection is made via my Airport Express Base Station instead of ethernet.
I've tried turning off Airport then trying to connect but get the message "Network not available. Check the IP settings...". Network Status says that Built-in Ethernet is active (green) on both computers. I have the ethernet configured manually with IP address different on both machines. Because I have the ethernet set up manually, I've also tried typing in the IP addresses instead of the computer names ( Go > Connect to Server > 10.0.1.5 with no luck. "AFP Connection Status"..... This server may not exist..... I've also tried Using DHCP and Using DHCP with manual address. The status changes yellow or sometimes red or I get the endless "Your Network Configurations have been changed" loop. You know the one, where you have to click OK and try to lock it before you have to click OK again. Personal File Sharing is on both machines. I've tried prioritizing the connections by placing ethernet above Airport but then I have no internet connection at all. Restarts have been tried. This is a new problem. I've had this network system working flawlessly for about a year. Don't know what happened but my eyes are crusting over searching goggle for answers. I'm no mac pro for sure. typing this gave me headache. When I first set this up a year ago it was plug-and-go. no problems. It takes 15 min. to send 1G by Airport compared to 30 sec via ethernet. I hope someone can point out my mistakes and/or give me some suggestions cuz i'm spent. Greatly appreciated.

try changing the network setting to ethernet to the top, by dragging ethernet over airport.
in 10.5 it is listed under the connection type (*/ set service order) |

To use ethernet as a second network, you need to set it up (both computers) with manual IP addresses in a different subnet than wireless.

using a different subnet than the wireless seems to have worked however, I have to turn airport off in the menu bar when i transfer files. Its too bad because any downloads that are in progress are obviously interupted. Is there a way to have the two networks working at the same time? I had it working this way before

I've heard that using DHCP to connect to the internet can sometimes over ride other network configurations that are set up (such as a mac to mac ethernet connection) and that I should try entering my IP, Subnet Mask and Router info manually. I tried this and was then unable to connect to the internet. The DHCP vs Manual info is exactly the same! Is there something about DHCP I don't understand? Also, would the IP Address Class have something to do with my overall problem?

Maybe you should tell us the IP addresses of everything (not the WAN IP - the LAN ones- all). And subnet masks if different from 255.255.255.0.

OK, sweet! Looks like it was the IP Class. I'm using a Class A IP Range on both macs to connect to my Airport (using DHCP). I'm using a Class C IP Range to connect the two macs via Ethernet (Manually). I learned something today! ![]() Subnet Mask is the same on Airport and Ethernet Configurations (255.255.255.0). Airport is set at the top in Network Port Configurations. The two networks are again working beautifully together. ![]() Thanks for the help gsahli and appleman_design - clicked the lock to prevent further changes
