Out of the blue, I can't seem to SSH into my iMac anymore as of last update.
1) I checked that remote login was turned on in sharing. 2) I can see and ping my iMac 3) My password has not been changed (checked with 'sudo ls') 4) The problem occurs when trying to SSH into my iMac from my iMac itself ('ssh localhost') The symptoms are: a) Host is found, password requested. b) Give password, abnormal pause. c) Password requested again, not mention of permission being denied. Here's a sample from secure.log for one such login attempt. Code:
Jun 20 08:59:24 h072 com.apple.SecurityServer[22]: Failed to authorize right system.login.tty by client /usr/sbin/sshd for authorization created by /usr/sbin/sshd. Jun 20 08:59:24 h072 sshd[18313]: error: PAM: Authentication failure for illegal user Edward from localhost Jun 20 08:59:24 h072 sshd[18313]: Failed keyboard-interactive/pam for invalid user Edward from ::1 port 52916 ssh2 |

The "illegal user" stuff in the logs might mean that your user account is not listed as being allowed to use 'ssh' in the ssh config files - have you changed these?
Or perhaps it indicates some corruption in the user accounts database. Maybe try creating a new user and tying when logged in as that user.

No, but I did update from 10.5.6 for 10.5.7 recently. Is there anything specific I should look for? If possible, I'd rather not have to create a new user.

Creating a new user is merely a diagnostic step.

Have tried. Can't login to that user, and same problem when I switch.
EDIT: By "can't login" I mean "via ssh". |

I presume you are using the command
ssh edward@ip_address_of_machine ? In System Prefs > Sharing > Remote Login > Allow Access for all users ? |

Funny story. Turns out I (presumably) accidentally clicked "Allow access only for these users" in that menu, and left the list blank. Thanks for the help troubleshooting. |

OSX gives a terribly uninformative error message here. it really should say "ssh access not allowed for edward; see System Prefs > Sharing > Remote Login > Allow Access for all users'
