var/log/asl file updates every 10-sec

I've noticed that this file in var/log/asl
2009.05.07.U501.asl

updates every ten seconds. I am unsure exactly what's in it as most seems garbage characters as read in the simple log-viewer.

Yesterday I took a hard look at the Macbook-Pro 92gB drive after receiving HFS errors when trying to use iDefrag ... subsequent use of Disk-Warrior repaired all ... but in my quest to find out what's wrong I cam across various forum posts about the asl folder.

What process is causing this file to trigger every ten seconds? Can I stop all asl additions or should I not mess with it?
