Quicktime screen recordings and Sound

I want to record a video that plays on the Mac, getting the sound of the video and not from the computer microphone. IOW, I don't want the sound of me putting away dishes, JUST the sound of the video I'm recording.

Doesn't seem possible; you either get "none" or you get "microphone."

Is this the way it is?

thank you!

Yes. That's the way it is. The alternative is to buy screen recording software. Here is one that I like very much:

Theres also Screenflow which is good. They are offering a 10% disc at the moment - here :

Its a bit more expensive than snapzpro ( which i also have ) but gives more in the way of editing possibilities & from experience, one can export with smaller file sizes.

I think you can use soundflower to pipe the sound.

Indeed, freeware Soundflower can be used to pipe sound from Core Audio output to a QuickTime (or another) input channel.

1. Install Soundflower.
2. Set SF as the audio output channel in System Prefs.
3. Set SF as the "microphone" audio input channel in QT 10.
4. Record.

Be aware that you won't be able to hear the audio with these settings in effect because you've redirected system audio from speakers/headphones to SF's virtual output. When you finish recording, return the System Prefs > Sound > Output settings to your usual configuration.

macosnoob, Thanks for posting that, I would have done it myself but was dashing of to work.

I have done this before with soundflower a while back but could not remember the results.

Now I have time to look at it again I just wanted to point out that you can listen to the sound while recording. By opening the soundflower app. Which will place a menu bar item in the menu bar. You then just need to select the soundflower Built-in Output you are using you are using.
