yaboot is a bootloader for linux on ppc hardware. You install it by installing a linux distro on your computer. It needs to have its own partition on your hard drive, so you will have to repartition, and that usually means you'll have to wipe the hard drive that you install to (yeah I know, there's a couple solutions to that allow you to repartition without losing data, but I wouldn't trust them...) You don't run it, it will take over the boot process automatically if your computer's vram is set up accordingly. So to sum up: on a pure OS X system, yaboot fulfills no useful purpose. Why do you want to install it?

I have an external hard drive with a linux distro on it, and I can't seem to boot from my external HDD. It is firewire, not usb, and I have held down the option key on boot, and the external hard drive doesn't appear. (i've also tried the cmd + alt + shift + delete function, doesn't do any anything)

So does yaboot have to be on my powerbook HDD or on the External HDD with linux on it?

thanks for the reply btw

Well, installing linux to a FireWire disk and booting off of it is a hot topic in many linux forums (where you're more likely to get help than here, btw). Assuming that the distro you have on your FW disk is the right kind (ppc with a kernel that matches your hardware), here's a couple of links that may be helpful:

general

gentoo

ubuntu

fedora

It is not trivial, to say the least, and it will depend on the firewire drive you have. Some of them just plain will not be able to bootno matter what you do.

oh man, thank you

the only question i have is, since i'm a linux newcomer, where do all these scripts go? how do I put these on my external HDD. I can't seem to find the answer on google, so its probably a really obvious solution...
