Well my system is definitely ancient. My Pioneer DVDR 116 internal drive died and is an IDE drive and now all that are being sold are SATA drives. Is there a way to install a SATA drive into my unit using the internal bay or am I screwed with using an external. I'd really like to be able to install the drive in the internal bay. Thanks for any and all constructive suggestions.

I think you're mistaken about IDE. This is an early Mac Pro (circa 2006-2008), right?
MacTracker says this for the MacPro1,1: Optical Drive Interface 2 - Ultra ATA/100, 2 - 3.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA) OWC is one of many sources for an inexpensive replacement: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optic...s/superdrives/ (Scroll down and choose your Mac to see options.) FWIW, I note that internal IDE drives are also still readily available. |

macosnoob is not quite accurate.
The first couple of MacPro models came standard with PATA (IDE) optical drives. SATA is "available" on the logic board, and only needs running a couple of cables for power and the SATA data cable - but original equip was a PATA optical drive. And, IDE drives are readily available (but there's fewer sources now) |
