"Pictures" vs "My Pictures"

Hi folks,
I'm transitioning from an older macbook that ran 10.5.8, to a newer one running 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion). I'm a long time Mac user (since 1993), though I initially got pulled over from DOS and unix kicking and screaming.

I've had my own organizational system for files, but I'm trying to do a major cleanup, and to "be good" and do things the way OSX wants me to now.

In ~ for each user, there is a Documents folder and a Pictures folder and a Movies folder... but within Documents there is "My Documents" "My Pictures" and "My Videos". What is the intention of this seeming duplication?

Thanks for helping! I'm trying to merge files from to different user profiles into one, so it's a bit atypical.

The folders in your Documents folder were created by someone. They are not part of a standard OS X install.

Sounds like a Windows migration. "My Pictures/Documents/etc. are standard Windows folders.
