27" iMac, 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 12gig RAM, OSX10.8.2, 1 TBHD
I want to extract a movie from a DVD-R I bought from the internet probably made on someones PC. I have searched the internet and came up with instructions using terminal, but the instructions are several years old and not compatible w ML, or so I believe. I tried them, but they don't give the results I need. I didn't want to go too deep in Terminal without someones guidance. In Mountain Lion, what would the terminal commands to identify the mounted directory, extract the movie and allow me access to it on my desktop?

You don't mention what directions you read, but this post on Apple's forums appears to be relevant, and none of the commands given have changed in the last few years.
The reason I point you at someone else's post is because I don't have a DVD-R formatted in TinyUDF to test on. Trevor

re: Help w TinyUDF Filesystem DVD-R
Hi, Trevor. I thought this was the place to ask about using terminal in OSX Mountain Lion. Did I get the wrong forum? I used to be able to ask such questions here at MacOSXHints.

You have the right forum, and can ask such questions. Nothing I said was meant to dissuade you from asking this or any other question.

When I am instructed to:
Mac~ zaphod$ sudo ls -l /Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume/Password:<enter your root/admin password> I get: -bash: enter: No such file or directory Any help would be appreciated. I submit the terminal commands in the previous solution: $ mount Mac~ zaphod$ sudo ls -l /Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume/Password:<enter your root/admin password> Mac:~ zaphod$ sudo cp -R /Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume/VIDEO_TS ~/Desktop sudo chmod -R 777 ~/Desktop/VIDEO_TS/ |

Yes. This is all explained in the post I linked you to. As the writer of that post says, "When you insert optical media in the Mac, it automounts it under /Volumes/[something]. " and "You'll note that the mount point is "/Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume" (note where I've placed the backslashes in the above example. You'll need them if the volume name has spaces in it. Translation: put a backslash before a "space" character... it is important)." Don't enter exactly StorageLabs TinyUDF Volume unless by some very strange stretch of the imagination that's the actual name of your DVD-R. Insert your DVD's name there. That's just an example that the writer made to show to put a name there, and insert the \ before any space. Trevor

The movie on the DVD is Barbara Stanwyck in "Forbidden", but this title does not show on the file name, just:
StorageLabs_TinyUDF |

With your help, the process w Terminal has worked half-way.
I reclaimed through Handbrake the movie file: VTS_01_1.VOB But the remaining movie file, "VTS_01_2.VOB" says that it is "0" bytes in size. And that is the second of two part movie files, I believe. I took a screen capture of the Terminal window. Can I display it here on the forum? |

this appeared in my Terminal window:
cp: /Volumes/StorageLabs_TinyUDF/Video_TS/VTS_01_1.VOB: Input/output error cp: /Volumes/StorageLabs_TinyUDF/Video_TS/VTS_01_2.VOB: Input/output error cp: /Volumes/StorageLabs_TinyUDF/Video_TS/VTS_01_0.BUP: Input/output error If there were errors, why was I able to recover the VTS_01_1.VOB movie file |

I think that my DVD Superdrive has scared the DVD-R now. I tried it in my DVD player and it plays splotchy even after cleaning the DVD Player.
This iMac DVD drive is a sorry piece of work. This is not the first time I have had damage done using the OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Thanks for your help today. |

Sorry, since I don't have a TinyUDF DVD to test with, I can't really say what to do next. It's certainly possible that there's a problem with the physical DVD-R that you're using, but I doubt that it was caused by your DVD drive. It's also possible that your DVD drive is reading discs incorrectly and needs to be cleaned or even replaced.
