Perian no longer works

I'm trying to help my neighbor recover from some unintentional damage that he did to his system. He made the mistake of installing MacKeeper on his Mac, to 'clean up his system'. Of course, MacKeeper wound up deleting more than half of his apps, and he wasn't using Time Machine, because it wouldn't let him access his backups by hand. Anyhow, I've managed to recover a majority of his apps from the installation files and disks, but Perian wants to be stubborn.

When I tried to reinstall Perian from the .dmg, the Preferences panel opened, and a dialog box came up saying that Perian needed to close and re-open Preferences. Unfortunately, that is as far as the Perian installer goes. It did not fix Perian, and now Preferences says that Perian wants to close the panel and re-open it, every time that Preferences is opened. Is there a way that this can be fixed without a clean install of the system, now that Time Machine is back up and running?

What messages appear in your logs when this occurs? You can easily view your logs with the Console app, found in /Applications/Utilities.

Perian development has stopped.

Use VLC for your video playback needs. Quicktime X is an incomplete piece of crap nowadays ;-)

Inside the prefpane (right click show package contents)
You can manually install all the bits if need be.

So copy the Components to desktop unzip and move.....
A52Codec > /Library/Audio/Plug Ins/Components
Perian > /Library/Quicktime
AC3MovieImport > /Library/Quicktime

Perian > /Library/Quicktime
AC3MovieImport > /Library/Quicktime

That worked perfectly. Thank you!!!!

i think you also could have set system preferences to run in 32 bit mode and then perian would have been able to complete where it was getting stuck.

but gotta wonder about the integrity of the system to fail a simple install like that.

The trouble is that the Perian installer should have set 32 bit mode -- that's what the restart System Preferences is about.
