Restoring a Verizon iPhone.

Is it ok to just do this in iTunes? No special carrier firmware required, or does iTunes take care of that?

As necessary, iTunes will handle any discrepancies between models and offer you the proper firmware for the device.

I don't believe updates are so much about carrier-specific differences as it is hardware differences. As I understand it, the 4S was the first universal iPhone, able to run on any network, but early versions had different cellular chips (e.g., CDMA vs. GSM).

Ok, have a friend whose SMS function died when he enabled iMessage, so I was thinking a straight restore might be a good starting point??

I would first test how things work with iMessage disabled. Does SMS sending then work?
