Microphone on my Mac Mini
I have purchased 2 different Microphone's for my Mac Mini, neither work, don't understand why. I have headsets with Microphones that work, can someone explain?

Go to System Preferences > Sound > Input and make sure the external mic is selected and the level is appropriate.

Does your headset microphone use the microphone jack or is it USB?

Is it possible the ones you purchased are Lo-Z impedance (150 ohm) rather than Hi-Z (10K)? Just a thought. |

Most Macs need a line level microphone.
A lo-Z mic (low output voltage) although typical for use as a mic, typically won't give enough output to hear on a Mac You need a mic with Hi-Z, also known as line-level. A lot of users go for a USB mic, which will also work. Or, you could run yours through a mic-level preamp first. |

I have one in a drawer somewhere.
If you don't have one, and you want one, you'll need to buy one. And, you can find preamps in a wide range of prices. If you are looking for an expensive one, then you only have to look... A few choices here: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/micro...catId=site1YFG You'll see a pretty good range of choices between $70 and $100. Those will give you something like pro capabilities. Or, a simpler sound interface, like the iMic, which (again) uses the USB bus for audio, including mics. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Griff...ign=productads Not a preamp, per se, but allows you to use your present mic through that iMic adapter. |
