What is turned off by sleep
I have a USB full-size (with number pad) keyboard. Usually when I come back to my Mountain Lion iMac, touching any key will wake the Mac, but occasionally, particularly after a long sleep, I have to press the power button to wake the machine. Is there an explanation for that? Is USB power turned off after some time in sleep passes? I know that bluetooth must be because my Magic Mouse will never wake the machine and takes a moment to reconnect when the Mac does waken.

System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced has an option to allow such devices to wake a machine. Presumably you have this unchecked. I have nothing to offer on the USB side of this discussion. |

In fact it is checked, NaOH. My personal belief is that to preserve its battery charge, the Magic Mouse powers down after some preset delay. USB defeats me too. Having said all that, I do find that Mountain Lion still has some "quirks" compared to Lion.

Interesting. I'm still running Lion, but I disabled that feature because it would lead to me inadvertently waking my machine by clicking the Magic Mouse or by sleeping the Mac then remembering to power off the mouse for the night (since the mouse burns through rechargeable batteries).

Mine burned through batteries in Lion, but surprisingly doesn't in ML, hence my reason for suspecting that the system can turn it off. Another mitigating factor, however, is that I do have another mouse connected to the machine most of the time to rescue the MM when it loses its connection which it does occasionally.
