ML Disk utility shows "Error: Partition map repair failed..."

Hi all,

Disk utility shows "Error: Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size"

This error has been around for sometime (AUG 2012 or so) And seems to show on ML 10.8.2 with no resolution so far.

I am also experencing the same thing on a Seagate Drive and on a Buddy's LaCie external.

Q: Has anyone experienced this and has a possible solution?

Here's a link to the issue...

What are you attempting to do? Resize a partition?

The simplest, fastest, most reliable way to solve most disk issues is to repartition/reformat it and restore the data from a backup. Note that you have to change (even if it's back to the same setting) the number of partitions to trigger the "repartition" process. Otherwise DL assumes it's good as-is.

The linked thread seems to indicate the ML Disk Utility appears to have issues with large disks (or maybe just large volumes), most mention those larger than 2TB. The issue could even be the storage drivers in ML. Anyway, running ML DU seems to produce that error, which MIGHT be just an indication - not a real error. But some users do report actual file system corruption, but apparently not everyone has that experience.

Hi,

In my case this was a new drive - with = "Error: Partition map repair failed while adjusting structures to fit current whole disk size"

And I also tried 4 partitions but no help

And I also tried formatting same on older 10.6 mac with no errors - then came back to 10.8 and error shows there...

Can some folks please try this on there own setups to see how widespread this is...

Criteria...

1 - ML 10.8.2
2 - Large external drive 2T or greater

Thanks

Firewire

Are any of these drives Firewire? Are they Oxford? If there not Oxford chipsets that might be a contributing factor. If there multi-interface drop back to USB.

Hi anthlover - in my case (no pun intended) it's only usb3.0 and seagate case so hard to tell if it is Oxford chipset.

Can anyone else try running DU on the partition MAP on a 2T or greater external?

1) See discussion and recommendations in this CNET document:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7...-large-drives/

2) Is the drive in question powered via USB? (As opposed to having an AC adaptor cable)
There have often been issues with external drives demanding more electrical power from USB than is allowable by the USB spec. It is quite likely that larger drives might need more power. Try using an external (AC) power source if possible.

1 - Thanks I saw the reviews - and I feel I can rule out drive sleep since my actions were immediate.

2 - No This is a desktop unit with power supply.

Also - I just performed the same process to a 2.5" SEAGATE BACKUP PLUS 1.5 USB3.0 drive WITH USB POWER... and there were no errors - so maybe it has to do with the controller card on the DT 3T drive...

Any Ideas?

If it works with one drive and now another then you have determined you have some sort of drive issue (note the oxford thing is relevant only for Firewire).

But, the BU Plus is a smaller capacity, isn't it?
Isn't this issue mostly reported about larger drives? (2TB and larger)
So, you haven't really determined much...
