Mt. Lion Preview "Hand" tool????

what happened to the Preview Hand tool where you could scootch a document like a piece of paper?

All I can get is a text tool and have to use scroll bars to move document.

Any clues?

The whole ethos of Lion/Mountain Lion is that no one should need to use scroll bars for anything. That's why they took them away.

Do you not have an input device that handles scrolling? Magic Trackpad; mouse with scroll ball/wheel? I'm guessing that Apple decided there's no point having a tool in an app to do something that the input device should be doing anyway, regardless of tool selection.

this computer is a desktop mac pro. my input device is a wacom tablet. I'm a graphic artist..used to be the Mac mainstay customer. too bad OS X swipe technology doesn't obey my graphics tablet.

does apple think that we don't matter any more?

what a dumb move. I guess it's one way to force people to buy yet more hardware, that swipe pad they sell for 70 bucks.

sheesh.

thanks a bunch for them deciding that my purchase of their stuff is now stupid and must be punished with a lack of functionality.

It's really starting to feel that Mac OS is for the crowd of 'leets with money to burn.

so much for "the rest of us."

I have had two Wacom tablets, and you can control scrolling with them.

Failing that, <space> moves the page down a screen's worth; <shift><space> moves it up. There's also Page Up, Page Down and the arrow keys (shift increases the arrows range.)

how do you control scrolling with a wacom other than by click dragging the scroll bars you say apple has gotten rid of?

On the ones I've used (Bamboo series), scrolling is one of the things that you can program buttons to do. By default, clicking the rocker switch on the pen one way invoked scrolling, IIRC, but you could set one of the buttons on the tablet to scroll. Then your movement of the pen scrolled the page.
What model do you have? Check the instructions to see if it can do scrolling.

Apple has not completely "done away" with scroll bars, but the reason they hid them by default in Lion was to encourage people away from scrolling by needlessly dragging the pointer over to the scroll bars and manipulating the bars or arrows.
As the vast majority of input devices handle scrolling without needing to move the pointer, scroll arrows are redundant, and scroll bars are likely to become purely informational, i.e. where you are in the document, rather than a control for scrolling.

The two Bamboo tablets I had (Bamboo, Pen and Touch) had a button for scrolling. When you held down the button, the pen controlled scrolling (a bit like the Hand Tool in Preview).
Also, have a look in the System Prefs to see what options you can program the buttons to.

You should do well by setting the page to Fit Width and then using the Spacebar to go up and down.

Alternatively, if you need greater magnification, you can move around with the Loupe Tool.

Loupe Tool? you mean the magnifier?

I don't see that the magnifier can actually zoom me in but it does a nice job of magnifying.

thank you again..

I mean if you need to display the Page at great magnification than Full width (i.e. so you will need to scroll left and right), then you can scroll with the "Magnifier". (Icon is a picture of a loupe. I'm sure it used to be called the Loupe Tool. Perhaps in some other app...)
