iTunes : no sound

I have a Mini with OS X 10.6.8, and iTunes has recently updated itself to version 11. Since the update I can't get any sound through either headphones or loudspeakers.

The phones and speakers work normally with other sources, e.g. a YouTube video.

If I go to System Preferences –> Hardware –> Sound, I see "Select device for sound output". The only item shown is "Internal speakers (built-in)".

Any suggestions?

1. iTunes has its own volume slider. Perhaps it's turned down or off.
2. iTunes may be sending audio to an Airplay device that's turned off.

chabig: thanks. I think I had failed to realise that both sliders contribute to the sound, i.e. both of them have to be at least partly turned up, otherwise you hear nothing.

Very good. I was taking a stab. I'm glad it's OK now.
