Scanning app

Can anyone recommend a scanning application?
The one that came with my scanner is no good (Canon MP Navigator).
I've tinkered with VueScan and ExactScan but not been able to embrace it's functionality (I just wanna scan a document!).
Any recommendations would be great.

Which exact Canon model do you have?
Can you use the scanner with your built-in Image Capture app?
You should be able to do a simple scan with that, but it doesn't recognize some scanners natively. You would just need to try it out.

I suppose you already noticed that your MP530 is one of just a small number of Canon All-in-ones that has Apple drivers for only the printer, and not the scanner part.
Have you downloaded the most up-to-date drivers and other software from Canon's site?
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppor...ersAndSoftware.

Can you explain what you mean by the Canon MP Navigator software is "no good"?
Do you mean it doesn't work at all? or too challenging/lots of intermediate steps?

It limits the amount of characters (20) you can save a file name which becomes a pain when you're saving files like 'Taxes2011-1099_savingsBonds'
When you select what folder to save too it doesn't remember.
Not very flexible when batch scanning.

Yes, I've been checking for decent driver/software updates but nothing's rectified these issues yet.

Ah, I see what you mean.

Likely something to do with the method that Navigator uses to interact with the Finder.
That makes it less than efficient, if you have more that a small handful of documents to scan, but it's likely to do with how Canon interacts with its own software.
- just a suggestion..
In your example, you could code your file name to fit - like:
Tax2011_1099SavBond
It's not too tough to figure out - but might not be comfortable for you, and I understand that.
The batch scanning, I can't help you much with that.
Your model is, in my opinion, not the best choice for an all-in-one. I formed that opinion when I saw that the Apple standard install for that Canon does not include scanner drivers. Canon provides the drivers to Apple to make available through Software Update, so you don't always have to go to Canon for updates. So, it's on Canon for that, and they don't seem to be providing much to make your job easier (one of the reasons you have a scanner in the first place!)
Perhaps using that MP530 under Windows gives better control... But, maybe that's not a direction that you want to go (and I understand that, too), but it's also not the first time that I have heard about printer/scanners with better software support under Windows.
There's not much more frustrating than hardware that is, in a sense, only partly supported.

I use Canon's software with my scanner and of course it has the same issue. I just save to the Desktop, rename the file, and then put it away.

Preview

I have used a few older all-in-ones over the pat few years and one by one they have stopped being able to scan through their own drivers, usually due to an OS upgrade.

I've resorted to using Preview - you can scan most things fairly easily direct through File>Import from Scanner ..

I have a CanoScan Lide 200 and use Image Capture that comes with ML. It does a great job.
