"HD must be repaired", "Repair failed, can`t shut down HD"
Oh man,
I ran OS X` HD Utility and checked the volume of my boot HD. HD Utility found that the number of files is incorrect. As advised, I rebooted from an external drive to repair the internal HD. Unfortunately the repair procedure was always stopped right away with the error message that the drive could not be turned off (I don`t know the message in english as I use localized language in OS X). Now what? Last edited by mostly harmless; 01-23-2013 at 11:22 AM. |

Could not be turned off? Perhaps it could not be unmounted..?
That's still weird if you booted from another drive. If the drive is using Lion or later, try booting from the Recovery Partition. |

Are you sure that you booted from an external drive? You usually get that sort of message if you are actually using the drive you are trying to repair.

Mac OS 10.6
The drive has a USB 2.0 connection. I don`t have a bootable drive with Firewire. And I am sure that I did not try to repair the external drive. The internal drive is named Macintosh HD. The external is named differently and was correctly shown with the yellow icon for external drives. |

Yes, I am sure. For example there was a video on my desktop that I had deleted after the last backup on this drive. |

It was shown as yellow *after* you booted from it? That sounds strange.

Mine did boot from USB with 2 different external drives. This morning I booted from another USB 2 drive. Again, at first, I could not repair the internal drive. I logged in to another user account with admin rights and it worked. ![]() When in the account without admin rights, there was a prompt to authorize the repair with admin name and password. But the repair wasn`t performed. Once in the admin account it did work. |
