Sound alerts

I have a CD with various sounds on it. I would like to add it to my sound alerts.
They are not .aiff.

Import the CD to iTunes. ( ie drag the files off the CD into the iTunes music window )
In iTunes preferences under the General tab, click on Import settings. Change it to AIFF encoder. quit prefs.

Highlight the imported sound files and control click on them to open the contextual menu. You will see Create AIFF Version. click on this and iTunes will make an AIFF copy alongside the original imported track. ( AS you didn't state the file types , i am presuming that these sound files on the CD are mp3 or aac. )

Thank you for taking the time to respond.
The sounds on the disk have no file types.
I did what you have suggested but nothing happens when I drag a file into iTunes.

If you double click on the CD icon on the desktop - it will open a Finder window, showing the contents of the disk. Highlight one of the sound tracks - right click on it and click Get Info in the contextual menu that opens.

This will open an info window - and under 'Kind' in the 'General' section it will state the file type.

Report back with what you find.

The disk is probably an installer CD for a Sound Blaster device of some kind.
You need to double click on that disk to open it, then look for the files that you think are sound files. Do the same Get Info on one of those files.
What is the file type of one of those files on the CD?

What file extension does that "Sound File" have?

Coming from a Sound Blaster CD, it might be a SB studio sound file, with a file extension of .sou
And - probably Windows-only.

Stan1 could help by posting one of these files for examination. Please select one small sound file (less than 100K in size), zip it, and post it as an attachment.

Ricede, DeltaMac and Macosnoob-
Thank you very much for offering your help.

Did the right click to "compress" but it didn't come up as a choice.

Upload failed.

Is the file small enough? No need to compress for a file the size that macosnoob suggested (less than 100K, for example)

Does the file have any kind of name extension (like .sou, or .snd, or something else)
what exactly is the Sound Blaster CD for? It should have a device name on the label, or some other way of identifying what it originally was used for.

I'm suggesting zipping it in order to slide it through the message board filters. The board permits only certain types of files to be attached. I don't know if the filter really checks for a valid zip (for instance) file or if the filter only checks for a permitted file extension. A question for another day . . . .

I'm puzzled why Stan1 can't compress. Is the file on the Desktop or is it on the CD? Shouldn't matter, but put a copy on the Desktop and try zipping that one.

Stan1: If your signature is correct and you're running 10.4, you won't see Compress [file name], instead you'll see Archive [file name]. And no matter what, the choice won't be shown until you copy a sound file from the disc to your computer.

Sound Alerts

Thank you all for taking the time to help.

When I go to System Preferences and click Sound Effects what I want is in the sound list. Kind:Built-in.
When I click on the sound the screen flashes.
I went to Universal Access, clicked Hearing.
The Flash the screen when an alert sound occurs is unchecked.
The Enable access for assistive devices is unchecked.

Don't know what I did but the sound is in iTunes.
Get info says open with iTunes. It gives me choices...Simple Sound
and Other

When I hit the space bar in iTunes the sound plays.

Is it possible to export this sound into Sound Alerts?

You could copy the file into the Sounds folder in the Library.
I think the alert sound file has to be an .aif file, but haven't tried other sound file types.

If you only want the sounds available in your own home folder - you can copy them into user/library/sounds.

.aif is the Apple normal file type for sounds, but .wav files also work fine.

Now that Stan1 has the file zipped, maybe he will send a sample file so someone here can help decide if the sound will work on a Mac.

.sfil files are classic Mac sound files, used in Mac OS 7, 8, and 9.
OS X does not do anything directly with those old sound files, but you can convert them for use with a utility such as File Juicer.
