Kernel Panics caused by Logitech Bluetooth mouse
Hello
From time to time I get Kernel Panic (requiring hard shutdown) on my Mac mini 2009. I guess it's caused by the Logitech M470 Bluetooth mouse, 'cos it happens after the "mouse disconnected" warning (below are the details of KP report) Though this KP happens rarely, I wish it never happens, because you know, all your work on desktop goes unsaved. Note that, no other thing causes any KP on this Mac. All KP's are caused solely by the mouse. This might make me eventually change the mouse; possibly with a USB connected one. But before I do that, I'd like to learn what's exactly causing this KP and if there's a way to prevent it. Or, do you know if there's a decently-priced Bluetooth mouse which will not cause such KPs? Thanks. Code:

Do you only have the one 4GB memory stick installed?
Can you try upgrading your OS X system to 10.7.5? The Logitech software could also be updated. You are running version 3.5.1 - and the current version is 3.6 And, the Logitech software is not known as the most reliable software. Can you try the mouse AFTER removing the Logitech software? You should be able to use that Logitech mouse WITHOUT its "special" software. |

Hello yes I use just one 4GB DDR3 RAM but because it easily hits its limits I'm considering adding another 4GB. BTW, you said "memory stick", did you mean "RAM memory?"
As for upgrading 10.7.5, I postponed it as my SSD is 80GB and 70GB is already filled and an OS upgrade would take huge amount of disk space (at least 1GB) I also have concerns about more "Cloud" features talked about in relation to 10.7.5, basically I don't want more Cloud apps for this "desktop" Mac. I will upgrade to the Logitech's latest 3.6 Well, what makes this model of Logitech mouse is its extremely functional "Wheel" Its Wheel can be tilted left and right (in addition to the ordinary Wheel Click and Wheel Turns) and those movements can only be assigned to the Browse Forward and Browse Back using its software. At about $25, this functions are indispensible. So perhaps I can never use this mouse w.o. its software.

Yes, if you need the features that the software provides, then you may be stuck.
However, there's alternate mouse drivers that may work, too, such as SteerMouse, or USBOverdrive. You could try those, if updating doesn't seem to change anything. And, Yes, I used the term memory "stick" meaning that card which you install in your memory slot. You are running out of space on your SSD. You do know that your 4GB of RAM also takes up space on your SSD, right? If you add 4GB more RAM memory, then you will soon notice that you have 4GB less space on your SSD (making that space situation worse) Prices on the medium capacity SSDs (120 to 240 GB) continue to drop, so that's something to consider, too. (If your free space is not enough for applying current updates to your system, then that's a good reason to look for more space! )

I've updated the Logitech's SW to version 3.6 and for 1 day no problem. I wish no KP caused by BT happens in the following weeks on this version. I will continue to use that mouse. If any kp problem ever arises again, I might try alnternate mouse drivers you mentioned.
I didn't know 4GB RAM would take up so much space on my SSD. It must be something related to SWAP space on SSD. But anyway I will upgrade the SSD, too. The other day I 've bought a Intel X25 160GB SSD and yes they are nowadays very decently priced, I 've bought it for about $160. Before I buy the 4GB memory stick I have to wait though because not every stick works with Mac mini. I found out that those which have ELPIDA chips on work with Mac mini, so I've ordered one with ELPIDA chips.

4GB (or 8GB - whatever) takes up that space when you put your Mac to sleep. It's the restore space, in case the system loses power, or is accidentally unplugged when sleeping.
