iPod Classic not appearing in iTunes iMac Lion

I am not sure what is going on here.

I am trying to do some work with my wife's iPod on my iMac Lion. First thing I connected the iPod using my powered USB HUB and the iPod was not recognized by the iMac. So I connected it directly to an iMac USB port and it is now on the desktop. Why not from the HUB?

However when I open iTunes i do not see the iPod as part of iTunes.

On our other Mac's the iPod shows up in iTunes.

What am I missing here. I can play the iPod by opening it and clicking on a selection, but I also now need to supply a user name, and password.

It seems like Apple has really complicated things here.

How do I make this work?

Hi, I am a bit of a n00b, but I myself used to have an iPod classic and I remember not being able to be charged when connected via a USB hub. I'd guess, insufficient power is the reason why your ipod does not appear on your computer when connected via your hub.
