How to best share data in dual boot setup?
My Snow Leopard Mini started acting strange, I installed a 2nd HD (SSD) and did a clean install of Mountain Lion there. When I booted into ML I could not access the user folder on the other HD. The I did something probably stupid: I applied my ownership to the folders on the Snow Leopard disk. Now I can access the files but still am asked for a password all the time.
When I boot back into Snow Leopard I get privilege problems all the time. The strangest thing is that the same owner is listed twice in the Info window, e.g. like this: Name Privilege everyone Custom julia (Me) Read & Write admin Read only julia (Me) Read & Write Regardless of the mess I created, what is the best solution for my scenario? How do I make sure i am the same owner regardless where I boot from? Thanks for any help! |

Same name is one thing but same User ID/GUID is another. The users will not be counted as same user as the GUID will be different.
It is not really possible to share the user folder between the 2 operating system.....files are files so that is not the issue but a lot of stuff in ~/Library cannot be shared between the 2 OS's. What is the goal ? Stop using Snow and use ML ? |

A separate partition would solve the problem. You can set that partition to ignore permissions. Then you should be able to access files from both OS's without problems.
Recovering from the ownership changes you made in Snow Leopard could be difficult. The first step would be to open Disk Utility while running Snow Leopard and run "Repar Permissions" on the SL hard disk. I don't think that will fix everything, but it's a good start. |
