Pet Peeve

Whenever I install an OS update, my desktop picture reverts to the original one that came with the computer. SInce I don't like it, I have to go to Preferences and select another one. Couldn't Apple manage to retain user preferences?

It didn't use to happen to me, and doesn't on my MacBook Air. Googling indicates I am not alone, but the fixes are quite convoluted and not worth it, since I can easily change back. Perhaps the next OS update will cure it.
