UDP from Script

Can text commands be sent and received via UDP on a specific port from an AppleScript or Shell Script

Ahh, Hayne, that's it. That will accomplish what I have in mind. I want to communicate with a remote (Wi-Fi) set of power switches to get/set the state of the relays there.
