Mountain Lion install on family Mac machines?

Hi All

I have recently upgraded to Mac Mountain Lion via App Store and read somewhere that this entitles me to install Mountain Lion on my family's Mac machines. Is this correct?

My son and daughter have older machines White MacBook's, and I am not sure the ML will install on that, but my wife has a Macbook Air purchased last December which it will install on.

However, if I can do this under the terms of the ML agreement, how do I get Mountain Lion installed on my wifes machine? I downloaded it onto my Mac obviously, to install it... so how would I get it on my wifes machine?

Thanks all

Either use your Apple ID on her machine to download ML from your MAS account;
Or create an installer disk on a flash drive from your machine and then use that to install on as many computers as required.
(There are many pages of the internet given over to details of how to make the disk from the installer app that you download.)

A. Preinstalled and Single-Copy Apple Software License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or under a volume
license, maintenance or other written agreement from Apple, you are granted a limited, nonexclusive
license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Applebranded
computer at any one time. For example, these single-copy license terms apply to you if
you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple-branded hardware.

B. Mac App Store License. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App
Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App
Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/
itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
(i) to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of
the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running OS X Lion or OS
X Snow Leopard (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;

(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, to download, install, use
and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software for use either: (a) by a single individual on
each of the Mac Computer(s) that you own or control, or (b) by multiple individuals on a
single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. For example, a single employee
may use the Apple Software on both the employee’s desktop Mac Computer and laptop
Mac Computer, or multiple students may serially use the Apple Software on a single Mac
Computer located at a resource center or library; and
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple
Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own
or control that is already running the Apple Software, for purposes of: (a) software
development; (b) testing during software development; (c) using OS X Server; or (d)
personal, non-commercial use.

"on each computer that you own or control". It's reasonable to assume that a husband is likely to have some legal claim on his wife's possessions -- paid for by a shared account, or from the intrinsic status of being married.
Also, if the OP is the IT Support guy for the family, then "control" might apply.

I am of course, not suggesting that the OP runs through the streets as the Mountain Lion Fairy, installing it on everyone's Macs.

I hadn't read the EULA (click and be damned), but I had read in a review of Lion that things were a little more flexible now. You can't buy a Family Pack anymore, so there must be some leeway given.

You are allowed to install it on all machines in your household as far as i take the EULA if purchased from MAS.

There are some quirks of MAS if buying "Pro" Apple apps ( Aperture/Logic/FCPX) which are licensed per machine but overall there is no copy protection to stop you just a honour system ;-)

Thanks for the excellent info folks. We have four Macs in the house, 1 MacbookPro (mine), a Macbook Air (my wifes) and 2 Macbooks (son and daughter). I only want to install ML on the Air as the other two machines are too old I believe.

If I log into iCloud on the Air to install ML, then log back out etc, will this affect anything on my installation?

Personally i would make a USB install disk from your Mountain Lion installer and have this on hand just in case you need to reinstall (very rare ;-) or want to install on other machines.

http://www.cultofmac.com/180925/how-...mountain-lion/

Basically you can login to MAS with your Apple ID download and install ML on Air. That is it really. Once installed setup iCloud with her ID and switch the MAS to her ID unless you share your ID for all purchasing.

In an ideal world.....families should/would have....
1 generic family Apple ID for all purchasing of all Content, updates, iTunes etc. This can be setup without credit card and use gift cards or top up credit from another Apple ID.
Then each person in family has a separate Apple ID for iCloud (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, messaging etc)

We all really hope one day for Apple to work out how to Merge purchases/content from other Apple IDs into another. I think however i may be dreaming !
