macbook late 2006 and sony trinitron
Hi all, I have a macbook that is connected to a 32" 16:9 CRT Sony trintitron tv via yellow Composite video cable from the macbook Mini DVI to S-Video AV adapter.
My problem is that in the display settings I get only 4:3 resolutions like 1024X768 and it is causing the picture to stretch, the picture is a little bit better when I chose the 50 Hertz instead of the 60 but then the picture is not on full screen. My question is: will the s-video cable do a better job than the composite? This tv has also a SCART inputs so maybe there is some VGA to SCART adapter? Because I have also the Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter, will it even do the job?

Does it make any difference if you turn mirroring off?
You can do that while a second display is attached, in the Arrangement tab of your Displays pref pane. |

I don't know what you mean by difference but when in mirroring mode the resolution list is all in 4:3 options.
I kind of solved the problem by using 480i res that gives me a natural dimensions but takes a little off the sides of the screen. still looking for best solution. I think the tv might be of high res (the model name s at the back and it is so heavy I don't look forward to looking )

If mirroring is OFF, then the external display will show an extension of your desktop (and won't show what you see on your internal screen.) An example of something to try with mirroring off, is to drag a folder from your main screen to the external, and see if the image distorts/stretches, etc.
You would also be able to set resolutions independent of the internal screen. And, 480i (or SDTV) has only the 4:3 aspect ratio. No 16:9 with SDTV. That's probably more to do with the input connections that you are using. Try changing the settings on your Sony TV. There should be a setting for wide-screen. But, you would need to use an input that allows it, so experiment with the different connections. Maybe the S-video will help that, I don't remember. I also don't know about adapters to connect your MacBook somehow to the SCART connector. From what I can find out, that requires some form of powered adapter box, and not just a simple adapter. I could be wrong about that, I've never messed with SCART. Search for "VGA to SCART adapter" |
