Software Update Stuck

I lost my Internet connection when doing Software Update. Now it's stuck. I tried to restart, but I'm warned not to do that. See the attached screenshot. It's been like that for three hours, with no progress at all.

What should I do? Just do a power cycle, or?

Incidentally, I had quit Safari, but the Installation Alert never went away.

If there's any "damage to your computer" (as mentioned in the warning message), it would have happened already, when you lost your internet connection during the update process. Given the situation, ignore the warning and restart.

I'd not advise a hard power cycle if the computer will respond to a more graceful software restart.

It took almost five hours for "running package scripts" to finish. At that point I was able to "gracefully" restart the Mac. Unfortunately, every time I restart and log in to my account I get the following crash dialogs:

Code:
usernoted quit unexpectedly
SystemUIServer quit unexpectedly
UserEvenAgent quit unexpectedly
Dock quit unexpectedly
talagent quit unexpectedly
launchproxyls quit unexpectedly
I guess that means the damage was done.

Oddly, once I dismiss those crash dialogs the machine seems to run normally.

Now what?

^Thanks. Exactly what I decided to do.

Unfortunately, the download has been "stuck" with six minutes remaining for past half hour or so....

It took forever to download and I had to stop and start it several times to get it to finish.

I ran OSXUpdCombo10.8.2.pkg and restarted, but, when I logged in after the restart, I still got three crash reports:

Code:
mdworker quite unexpectedly
launchproxyls quit unexpectedly
UserEvenAgent quit unexpectedly
I have no idea what to do about those.

And, the Installer is still running. Should I Quit it, or just leave it running?

I'm still having crazy problems with my account on this machine. If I restart and then log in to my account I still get the crash notices on all of these:

Code:
usernoted quit unexpectedly
SystemUIServer quit unexpectedly
UserEvenAgent quit unexpectedly
Dock quit unexpectedly
talagent quit unexpectedly
launchproxyls quit unexpectedly
Plus, the Launch Services database seems to get reset for some applications on every login:

Quote:
You are opening the application ... for the first time

This happens with BBEdit, Graphic Converter and several other third party applications. It does not seem to happen with Apple applications.

None of these problems happen with other accounts.

I have tried removing all startup items, but the problem persists.

Any ideas?

I'm wondering if signing out of the Mac App Store would help. At the least, quit and relaunch the application before logging back in to the store.

Interesting thought. I will give it a shot.

Further online research indicates that Bark, the Growl plugin, might be responsible for the usernoted crash. I've uninstalled but have yet to restart.

As suggested, I logged out of the App Store and quit.

I also completely uninstalled Bark.

I rebooted. Upon logging into my account I got the following "Unexpectedly Quit" messages:

Code:
Finder
talagent
SysteUIServer
launchproxyls
Dock
Note that this list is a bit different from previous lists and no longer includes usernoted.

I no longer get the "You are opening the application...." notices when opening third party applications.

Clearly, something is seriously amiss.

I've exhausted my investigative abilities.

I supposed the next step is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall.

If so, it will be only the second time in 24 years that I've had to reinstall any Mac OS....

1. Try safe boot mode. No error messages there could mean a bad third party extension.

2. You already have the problem narrowed down to this one account. The problem could be somewhere in the Library folder for this account. Try putting the Preferences folder for this account on the desktop and restarting.

Actually, my math is bad. It's been 28 years. Bought my first Mac in July of 1984....

Safe Mode is a good idea. I hadn't thought of it since the problem seems to happen not a boot time but at login time. I will give it a shot.

Started in Safe Mode and logged in.

No problems. No crash reports.

Deleted a few things from my Login Items including ClamAV, SoundSource and TunnelBack.

Rebooted normally.

All seems well.

Thank-you.

Though you seem to be on good... You also could of reinstalled the base OSX version and then started over with updates.

You mean reinstall without wiping the hard drive?

Yes

Yes, have not had to do so yet with ML or LI but it is usually a sound procedure.

Cool Thank you for the "Bark" advice

You probably saved me days worth of work, doing the same kinds of things that you did. I have been getting "usernoted unexpectedly quit" messages -- as soon as I delete one, another appears, one after another. Rebooting didn't help. I wasn't burdened with your other error messages.

After reading this, I went to Growl and tried to uninstall Bark from there. Instead, the uninstaller seems to have RE-installed it. But, without further to-do, I put away the remaining "Bark unexpectedly quit" dialog box and it hasn't returned. No rebooting or anything else. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks, again.
