MacbookPro won't allow me to install apps on other internal drive

Hi All

I have an early 2011 MacbookPro with a 350GB HDD, within which I have also removed the Optical Drive and replaced that with another internal 750GB HDD.

However, when I add applications, the Mac reports that it cannot install anything on the 750GB HDD as it needs to be running OSx...???

I have used it as my default for downloads etc, and all my music and images reside on there, but I now only have 75GB left on the internal HDD and wondered how I enable the additional internal drive to be used to store everything on.

Any advice please?

Thanks

Some apps must be on the boot volume. If it has an installer, it's usually one of these. If it comes with a "Drag app to Applications" installation then you can put it anywhere. See your other entry for moving your OS elsewhere, or just clean out your media to a large external drive.

Clone the 350 gig to the 750, switch boot drives within System Preferences, reboot, reformat the 350 and carry on.

OK, great stuff folks thanks so far. Seems straightforward enough to be able to do that.

1st stupid qn coming up: so how do I clone from 350GB HDD to 750GB HDD...? Do I need to purchase Carbon Copy Cloner?

You can do it with Disk Utility, in the "Restore" tab.

But, in Disk Utility - if I restore from 350GB HDD -> 750GB HDD - there's an areas under the Destination line that says 'Erase Destination and copy the contents of "Mac 350GB" to it.' - which is not what I want to do.

I guess I could move everything I have on the 750GB HDD to my time capsule 2TB drive, then do as you suggest, then move it all back...? Unless of course, there's another way...?

I'd suggest carbon copy cloner. I used the free version for a couple of months and finally ponied up and paid for a license. Very pleased with the product, and I have tested the ability to boot from the cloned external copy a few times - simply to set my mind at ease.

How much data do you have on the 2nd drive - is there enough space on the 350 to copy it there prior to cloning? If not, external usb drives are seemingly cheap every day. Perhaps a friend / work mate has an external you could borrow, etc.

Best of luck.

Not enough I'm afraid... only about 70GB free hence wanting to 'swap' them over.

What are you using to back up your system?
How much capacity do you have on an external hard drive?

Disk Utility might let you add a partition to the 750GB HD without erasing anything. Click on the HD icon, then click on the Partition tab. Is half of the partition white and half blue? If so, you could make another partition below your current one and use that to start up. But that means you are stuck with two partitions on the drive, which can be inconvenient.

It's probably better in the long run to move the data to the time capsule drive temporarily.
