Flash SSD for Mac Book pro 15''
I'm looking to change the my existing internal hard drive into one more faster, a flash SSD. But I don't know wich one to get.
I'm working on Resolume and it often crashes because of the high quality of clip I use. I need to buy one of 512 GB, I can afford the prize around 400 euros I guess. My computer is a MacBookPro - version 10.6.8 - 2.66 GHZ Intel Core i7 with a memory of 4go - 1067 Mhz DDR3). I have looked on the web and saw there are problem sometimes of compatibility and I'm a bit confused . When I'll get it someone will install it for me, but i need to bring the good one of course... Thanks very much for your help. |

I have installed many Crucial M4 drives good price and performance. I use with Modul8 and it flies! I have also taken out my optical drive and popped a 750GB SSD/HDD just for extra SATA storage no more trying to use Firewire drives for VJing.

There have been discussions about SSDs here. Do search a bit.
I have SAMSUNG SSD RBX Series 128GB M in one of my MBPs that is pretty old and does not give too good bench marks, but had noticeable performence boost when installed over Hitatci something(the fastest HDD at 2008). I put Corsair Force 3 in my video performance MBP recently and it gives me twice as good bench marks. Also there is a Kinston SSDs that is considerably cheaper, but with excellent performance. |

After having to deal with this subject quite a lot at work - you need to remember what OS you will be using - believe it or not, not all Apple OS's play nicely with every brand of SSD. If you're willing to go with a 512GB drive, and you want to someday install Mountain Lion on it - choose one that is not from Crucial - the M4 has been giving us hell and will not install on those drives. The best experience I have had was with either Samsung or Intel, although the Intel ones with 512GB capacity are still very expensive. Do some more research on the net, and remember that a key factor is also the "TRIM" command, and whether or not the trim enabler software available can deal with that drive. Apple uses mainly Samsung SSD drives internally, so that would be a good place to start. I'd stay away from the cheaper manufacturers like Crucial, I've had nothing but problems with them. BTW, I administrate close to 90 Macs in our company.
