Moving Thunderbird profile to a diskimage

Is there a way to move the Thunderbird profile folder to a diskimage that will also automatically open the image when TB is launched? I have done that with Apple Mail by placing an alias of the Mail folder in the ~Library - this will mount the diskimage holding the Mail directory when Mail.app is launched.

But moving the Thunderbird profile by following these directions just gives an error message if TB is launched without having the diskimage already mounted.

I am doing something similar with Firefox. It works for me, the disk image mounts when I open Firefox. I have the firefox profiles.ini file in the usual place. The .ini file was made using profile manager, similar to the instructions in your link. It references a folder on a virtual disk. It's been a long time since I set this up, but linking to a folder inside the disk instead of the whole disk may be important.
