Office 2011 / NAS

I cannot seem to open or save documents to my NAS. It is a D-Link DNS-320 network attached storage device. The error I get is attached. This example it from Word, but it also happened in Excel.

Windows machines running office 2010 have no issue with this NAS.

Any suggestions on how to solve this would be a great help.

Thanks,
Steve

I think it's a problem with the way Mac Office handles filenames. They roll a lot of their own code and are more restrictive than Mac OS X. Experiment with the file names and see you can figure out what happens. Also try the same with other apps. I bet you'll find it's just Office that has problems.

It is definitely just Office (other apps can access my NAS just fine), but I don't think it is about the file name. I just did another test with a new file simply called Test.docx,. and still got the same error.

I have read that Office apps try to create temporary files on a folder called .TemporaryItems at the root of whatever drive you are trying to access (read or write). I see that folder on the NAS. Perhaps there are permission issues with that folder based upon what I have read. But it is not clear to me how to configure so that it will work.

This sounds like a permissions issue with the folder for word's temporary files.
Google for similar issues with OS X server, and you will see strategies to resolve it.

Try and set the .TemporaryItems folder to 777 permissions. You woudl do this by logging into NAS and setting the permissions of this folder.
Also it can help to enable ACLs (maybe called advanced permissions) on the NAS.

See if this link sheds some light on the problem.
